  1. Cool! Seems to run pretty smoothly. Did you get it? And what do you mean, "Missing the anvil"? There's one sitting right next to it!
  2. Welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!!
  3. Welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!! Nice anvil, looks in good shape, put it to use!
  4. Had an impromptu chain-making workshop with the inimitable jlpservicesinc! (Learned a TON!!!)
  5. So, so. It’s mostly the big stuff, but sometimes you get lucky (like this time).
  6. Agree with what was said above. Also, consider adding some bright lights pointed at the anvil; that will make the autoexposure of your camera less dramatic.
  7. Technically not mine: it’s the one on loan from the college. However, they’re making noises about buying themselves a smaller benchtop model and letting me keep this one.
  8. If noise reduction is your goal, consider a fly press. They have the additional advantage of still working if the power goes out.
  9. Groin-groin! (That's "Oink-oink" in French.)

(May the one who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, bless and heal those who are ill. May the Blessed Holy One be filled with compassion for their health to be restored and their strength to be revived. May God swiftly send them a complete renewal of body and spirit, and let us say, Amen.)
  11. The brass pin closest to the blade on the straight-edged knife is a crack waiting to happen. Especially with coarse-grained woods like oak, you want enough wood on either side of the hole that it's not going to split itself apart.
  12. Heavier is better than lighter: more even heat, and less risk of burning a hole in it.
  13. We have both on IFI. When in doubt, go with "folks" or (if you want to be particularly Aussie about it) "mates".
  14. Avoid synthetic fibers. Natural fibers can be made more fire-retardant by wetting with a solution of borax and water and allowed to dry.
  15. What HojPoj said. You might also (budget permitting) look into having an insulating contractor spray a layer of sound- and fire-proofing foam over your ceilings or install a layer of rock wool above a dropped ceiling of acoustic tile.
  16. Have you tried making them on the end of a longer bar and then cutting them off?
  17. That’s what happens when you give in to the Dark Side.
  18. So, he’s got a knack for the Knik?
  19. That is an elegant and sophisticated use of your material. Well done indeed.
