(May the one who blessed our ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah, bless and heal those who are ill. May the Blessed Holy One be filled with compassion for their health to be restored and their strength to be revived. May God swiftly send them a complete renewal of body and spirit, and let us say, Amen.)
  2. The brass pin closest to the blade on the straight-edged knife is a crack waiting to happen. Especially with coarse-grained woods like oak, you want enough wood on either side of the hole that it's not going to split itself apart.
  3. Heavier is better than lighter: more even heat, and less risk of burning a hole in it.
  4. We have both on IFI. When in doubt, go with "folks" or (if you want to be particularly Aussie about it) "mates".
  5. Avoid synthetic fibers. Natural fibers can be made more fire-retardant by wetting with a solution of borax and water and allowed to dry.
  6. What HojPoj said. You might also (budget permitting) look into having an insulating contractor spray a layer of sound- and fire-proofing foam over your ceilings or install a layer of rock wool above a dropped ceiling of acoustic tile.
  7. Have you tried making them on the end of a longer bar and then cutting them off?
  8. That’s what happens when you give in to the Dark Side.
  9. So, he’s got a knack for the Knik?
  10. That is an elegant and sophisticated use of your material. Well done indeed.
  11. More practice scrolling/trivet making. Also finished my first friction folder/higonokami. Not perfect (and still needs some finish sanding and sharpening), but lots of lessons learned. 1080 blade, some random scrap for the handle.
  12. Trivet. This one was a proof-of-concept, and is really too small for anything much bigger than my largest coffee cup. (I also need a longer piece of stock!)
  13. Test piece for an idea I’ve been playing with in my mind: This was the first piece I’ve made in the gas forge, which went very well. However, there was a lot of heavy scale, which did not want to come off. Not sure if that’s a function of the forge or of my not having wire brushed it enough during the forging.
  14. Welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!! Hand-pumped is best for him now. It's safer, and he'll get a better feel for how more or less air makes a larger or smaller fire. That's a good lesson to learn right at the start.
  15. Grabbed a few pounds of 1/4” x 1/2” bar from the drop bin at my steel supplier.
  16. The heating element is made up of four quartz rods: two above and two below. I pieced the insulation around them, so that they’re exposed to the interior. I’ll probably still be losing some heat through the outside walls next to the elements , but a lot less. I also plan to add an expanded metal floor to protect the kaowool from bumps and tears. Doesn’t need to resist forging flames, so I should be fine.
  17. So, for the little divot in the middle, did you sucker-punch them? Lined my toaster tempering oven with kaowool and rigidized it with a blowtorch. I think I’m going to get a tube of furnace cement to fix the door lining (with oven thermometer) in place.
  18. How long did they take? I mean, is the “sucker born every minute” an industry standard?
  19. There was a good discussion about this last year. Might be a good starting place:
