  1. I like it. That single layer flower is cool. Now the challenge for the next one is to hide that spot weld on the flower.

  3. Hey Poet. Where did you get your glasses. I bought some shade 3 clip ons from Amazon and the description says they block "some" Infra red.
  4. Heres a vid of my dad grinding chipper blades for a chipper that will handle a 20inch tree. The vid starts with him pouring babbit spacers that locate the blades in the chipper to the proper depth. This has to be done after every sharpening to compensate for the removal of material from the blade.Then its the grinder. It holds 3 blades at a time and takes material from the angled part of the blade. A quick hit with a file on the flat back side cleans up the edge. He does this for a logger in northern Minnesota that produces chips that are burned in a power plant.
  5. Sure looks like the heel is broken off. No pritchel hole or hardy hole. You could build what is called a portable hole though. Face looks good. If your tests turn out good, point out its broken and explain what it will take you to recreat the holes in another device and perhaps you can get it cheap. 1 dollar per pound maybe or less. Its hard to judge the weight from dimensions. If you can afford 100$ I think that would be max unless your desperate for an anvil. Let us know how it tests. Thats the real determining factor.
  6. Hey Das. Ive managed to make all my tongs nasty looking even though they are pre cut blanks. But hey, they work :-)
  7. Oooh. Stainless would be cool. You could clean it out after using it, polish it to a shine and use it for a mirror :-) But realistically a 1/4 inch thick fire pot of mild steel will out live most of us :-)

  10. My guess is about 300 pounds of coal have went through her. It works great for about 3 hours then I have to pull the fire apart and scoop out what i call burning sand because it starts losing heat at that point then put the bigger pieces of still burning coke back in and pile new coal on and back to forging in 2 minutes. I got sidetracked once and buned the end off a 1 1/4 square 1018. So it heats good. I've played with the idea of building something that woud be more self cleaning but would rather spend my time forging then building someting different.

  12. I like it. An invisible stand that mounts the anvil on its side close to the ground. lol. Perhaps the wrong pic was posted?Lol. Heres my new stump next to my too low stump built up with 2x6's
  13. I see anvils in that condition and wonder what got them that way. Obviously the top plate forge welding process failed. If she could only tell her story of what happened. But anyway, right now you have a block of soft iron/steel and any repair you do isn't going make it worse. Do what Thomas suggested and see what happens. It cant hurt. I've seen some very aggressive repairs on YouTube that turn into a nice Looking anvil. If they are good anvils remains to be seen but they are probably still better then a block a mild steel or a rock :-) Keep us posted.

  15. I paint in an auto body shop. I took an unfortunate fall off of a ladder while painting a pickups roof that required rotator cuff surgery. So im on vacation now for the next 6 weeks
  16. Was this new and unused 3 months ago? Or is it an older anvil in beautiful shape? Sure looks like an older anvil with all those little pit marks all over the place.

  18. My style of hot cut gets used a lot. I just sets in the hardy and lifts out easily and doesn't move. Works great. The cutter is a lawn mower blade .

  20. Heres before and after grinding. The radiuses work great. I did put a little weld in the really low spots. I preheated it for 4 hours with 4 halogen lights then a weed burner to almost 200f. Then short welds to minimize the heat affect zone. Welding took less then 5 minutes. Ground it up and checked for rebound and delamination and alls good. I must have heat soaked it good with the lights because it was still warm 4 hours later.
  21. Matthew those are totally awesome. You recreated a tool that lived a thousand years ago. Nice. Now onto recreating those hammers, although there not as pretty as the tongs. How about those tongs they found . Looks like they could still be used today. Wouldn't that be cool to use a thousand year old tool today. I'm getting goose bumps thinking about it :-)
