I needed to fill in around my coke pot, I used a high temperature grout. You should be able to find refractory cement at any place that sells fireplace equipment, wood stoves or inserts.

Hey all, I picked up a 14' Shopcraft Bandsaw that is in need of new rubber "shoe"(?) belts that go around the pulleys that the blade rests on. Anyone know where I can find these and if this is even the right term for it? I did find the drive belt at McMaster-Carr.

These can easly be rounded over the anvil horn. No special tools. Once you have the end rounded, just hang it over the far-side of the anvil and bend it 90 degrees. Ask one question to a group of smiths and you come away with many different ways to do the same thing.

Go to a civil war re-enactment and talk to a sutler (civil war general store in a tent). They would use this to apply heel plates to the heels of brogans and cavalry boots. Basically there are skoeing men.

My forge at the Union Mills Homestead is a brick colonial style forge. It had a brick firepot that was the depth of the length of the brick which is about 7". A duck nest tuyer rested under it with the clinker breaker. Much too deep to make the firepot effecient. I had to place a 3" dia. pipe in the middle that was about 3-4" in length and pack clay from the bank of the creek around it to make the firepot about 4" in depth and place a grate over the pipe. It was ok until the clinker built up and adhered itself to the clay when forge welding. We would have to repair the clay. Eventually got rid of it and dropped a 13" round coke pot into the brick firepot that was 4" deep.

If you are set on getting rid of them, check with the local land fill to see if the hava a recycling area for metal. Here where I live many people take the larger propane tanks for Gas grills there. Alot of time they are full. The people at the land fill just let out the gas and then recylcle them if they don't take them home and use them first. Reb The Civil War Blacksmith

I live in a townhouse community with a yard that ia 18 ft wide x about 30ft. Within those measurements is a 12ft x 16 ft shop, a 14ft patio and not enough grass to feed a goat. Reb The Civil War Blacksmith

I am glad all turned out well. There are many lessons learned as we go through life, hopefully this is one lesson that won't need to be relearned. I even wear safety glasses at re-enactments that have the appearance of period glasses. Reb The Civil War Blacksmith
