My 2 cents, As the owner of a welding/fab/CNC cutting/blacksmiths shop I use a 70/30 rule. If it takes less than 70% of the time heating and hammering I won't call it hand forged. Ken

Got some nickle rod or brazing rod? If they don't want it back I would weld or braze it. Careful thou some suppliers want the defect back. Ken

I just use a couple of bath towels. Get them wet(not dripping) Haven't had a burn mark yet. Have welded lots of racks this way.(welded not tacked) Ken

Hope the shoulder is OK. Been there done that with my 3hp with 10in wheels. Be safe. Ken

Avadon, It's not a big deal to put a horn on your 4 incher.I put one on an 88 lb H-B this way. Find a 4X8 in rb Drill and tap 3/4". Drill and tap the block same. A 4" stud/all thread. Bevel the edge of rb. Screw toghter And weld. Shape the bottom and sides with O/A. No one yet can tell which H-B has the replacment. Ken

One more thought. Opening the first tank too fast(empty lines) could trip the safty. Now you have pressure in the lines when opening the 2nd tank. One tank may have seemed fuller but they are filled with liquid but vapor is what comes out. Ken

Problem is when ya get on in yrs. The first sign of filters needing cleaning is the magic smoke. Opps Ken

Thomas, Ya not hitting it hard enough. 10 to 1 rule says ya need a 51.5 lb hammer. Use at 220bpm if possible Huge Grin. Ken

See if ya can find a local with a portable band mill. They can clamp a stump verticle flip it and cut the bottom. Ken

Yeh, Just wait till they clamp your head and have to use a hollow needle to cut sompthing out. Thing looks like a power pole coming at ya. Been there done that don't want to go there again. Try driving 45 Mi home with a patch on your eye. Or going to work the next day and hitting the mark with a center punch. Ain't happining. Ken.

Got one like that. Watch your fingers. Have nicked a few trimming or scliceing up pices for the fireplace, Ken.

My quick fix for this kind of thing. I use about a 6" piece of flat bar. Drill a same size hole Inna FB heliarc or mig thru the hole. Tap with hammer usually comes out. Ken.

Yeh I know about the back (65yrs of iron working) The sand works good. Ya build your box and a floating plate to go under the anvil. bury the base about 2-3 inchs in sand. Have a friend who teaches at John Cambell uses one like that. I am still using stumps but someday. Ken

I need to ask how heavy is your anvil? I do not use pins on mine. I know I can't hit even my small 88 lb hard enough to bounce it off a 1/2X1" pin. Most of the school teachers I know just use sand filled bases with no solid mounts. Ken.

Dan, Check it out totaly. May be electric and crank start. My 18hp on my splitter is electric start, Mag Ign. Some had motor/generators on them. If its crank only be careful that bad boy can bite. Ken.

Sorta like anvil height. If your 3'6" or 6"3' Knuckles above the waist or below the knee. Use it and if you hurt move it till you don't hurt. My 3 cents worth. Ken.

I am with Joseph on this one. Hi joseph long time. I have met a lot of folks who will tell you what to get. Most of them have hade only one anvil. I have and have had H-Bs Trentons Fishers and Vulcans. I will not recomend one over the other. Try as many as you can then decide. Ken

I have a question. An all thread to attach the anvil? One or two? You need to anchor both the front and back. Most of the metal box bases I have seen are sand filled. Lets ya adjust the height when needed also cuts down the ring. Ken

Something not mentioned here. When you speak of making tooling for sale. You need to consider overhead (going to have paid help insurance) How about liability ( Irving the idiot is hurt using your tool and sues ya) My thoughts are if ya make it for yourself cheap fine. If ya can't/won't spend for a anvil or tooling save your $ till ya can. Ken
