What do you think of this anvil repair approach?
FE, I would go over the cliff with ya. Have welded a few. Not this method Just what I do after 40+ yrs of welding. For me it was do or not do. I like nice tools NOT acceptable tools. I have hit a 1qt oil can over 500 yds with iron sights. I do not tell anyone to weld or not to. Not to radius or do it. Do what works for you. Ken

What do you think of this anvil repair approach?
I don;t know where you can buy a good rod for $6 a lb. I wouldnt use it to repair dumpsters. I have payed $1.30 a stick for .035 cast iron tig rod. Best thing is check with a local supplier I have a chronotron rep local. Ask who in your area is using the high end rod. I called them and got a small amount. Ken

looking for my first real anvil
One thing I learned the hard way. Have cash when looking. A mint 300lb brand name is no great deal at $150 if ya only got $90 in your pocket. Been there done that. Spent mos looking finaly carved a RR track. Within a yr gained a 60lb fisher a 88 and 142 lb H-B and a 174 lb trenton. Passed on several others. They are out there. Just need to look everwhare. Best of luck. Ken

Description Help Question
You got it right. Old anvil/vise or at least 1/2 of it(like most) Being hollow cast iron puts it in the novelty group. They tend to chip/break or shatter if hit very hard. Ken

Rob, Over the yrs Chronatron has had some of the greatest rods for exotic work, Some of it seems to vanish with age Had a Rep stop in last yr. Asked about products I have used a long time ago. No info available was the answer. I have used a silver braze melt with a match remelt with a O/A torch. Watch out for mag cutting its hard to stop. Watched a factory fire in Conn yrs ago burn to the ground, I think it was 6 fire co.s tryed to put it out. Ken

Anvil Stand Sanity Check
Picked up a 150 lb trenton on a 3 legged(2 under the heel) heavy steel stand. That leg kept getting in the way of my right foot. Beeing it was a crappy stand anyhow. I just put it on a spare stump. As to wheels, I made a (Hofi) style base for a post vise and scroll bender. 2 ftX 4 ft X 3/4" plate. Wheels on one end bar socket on the other. I weigh in about 180 lb with 40 yrs of moving heavy steel it ain't moving. Cut the plate to 2X2 and weged it under the 3,000 lb shear. It will stay there till it says move me. Ken

Post Vise Repair
My 2 cents here. Grease is a bad thing. Filings and chips stick to the grease, Now you have a lapping paste in the threads. Ken
