buying a stick welder
Tis far better to have power and no welder than welder with no power. For extensions I use the heaviest I can get. Had two in a shop in Fla. A 50 and a 100. Hooked toghter they made a 400 amp unit weld like a 40. Ken

buying a stick welder
My 330 A/BP miller runs on a fuseabile disconnect(100 amp) Bear in mind the book numbers are for full load. In over 40yrs I have never run a welder at max power. The miller puts out 460 at full output(100 amps) So at 230 amps it only draws about 50 amps. My 180 hobart runs on a long 20 amp line(230 volt) Ken

buying a stick welder
Keep eyes and ears open. Had an old airco AC gas portable 140 amp(I think)Disabled vet friend kept asking for it. Told him if I can find a AC DC portable I would let him have the airco. A few weeks later local paper had a Lincoln G7 AC DC CC CV portable for $125. Had a flat tire and a loose valve seat. Temp fix on the valve seat still working 3 yrs later. Added a spool gun and Hi freq. Now it does it all. Don't over look the older units. I dumped a rebuilt Miller dialarc 250HF for a 30+ yr old Miller 330 A/BP stick/tig rig. .5-460 amps The old ones were copper wound. Thing weighs almost 1000lbs. Stick with 220V there are a couple of 110V migs 135s and 140s will do the job if you do yours. I have the Miller, an esab 250 migmaster and a hobart 180 and the portable. The addiction is the same welding or smithin. HMMM bigger, better, faster, harder. Ken

Can you identify this Green River vice and swage block?
I picked up one a couple of yrs ago slightly differant. It has a floating jaw. Great for twists no winding the handle. Do NOT get any part of you in the jaws. Made new CR jaws for it. Went to move it( about 100 lbs) grabbed the jaws and it SLAMMED shut. Got both palms. paid about $250 for it. Have seen them up to $550 down here. Location is key as shipping would be high. Best to find a local buyer if ya can. Ken

vulcan anvil
Vulcan's are near or at the bottom of the list. That is for a full time working smith. A 100 and up is an OK starter anvil. I couldn't find anything else so I got a 110 lb Russian. A few hrs later got a call to pick up a minty 100 lb vulcan. Russian went back to HF. all of a sudden it was raining Hay Buddens, Trentons and Fishers. The vulcan found a home with one of my guild members(also on here) Don't wait for greatest anvil. Get sompthing ya can hammer on now. Then just keep your eyes and ears open. WARNING you are entering the "I want a bigger better one" zone. Enjoy the ride. Ken
