191# Soderfors Thoughts
Wesley, Just a note passed on by my old farrier (60+yrs shoeing) He has a 98 lb H-B farriers anvil. Said its easier to blacksmith on a ferriers anvil than to do shoes on a blacksmiths anvil. I don't shoe but it seems to me. Clips and cams would make your life easier. The swede should bring enough to get ya a nice farriers traveling anvil im MHO. Ken

Perment forge
Welder, I have had several fireplaces and fire pits out of stone. Pull them out of the creek invites disaster. If dried they are fine. I lived in the oldest inn in Conn for a yr no problems with the stone fireplace. Ken

New anvils
My advice to newbies is find you a real anvil and see if ya gonna stick with smithing. Why spend a grand or two then say it's not for me. Or worse say I have so much invested I just have to do it. If ya have money to burn go for it. I am very happy with my 5 anvils 194 lb Trenton 142 lb and 88lb Hay Buddens 60 lb fisher and a 37 lb track anvil I built. All for less than $650. Do we buy a $150K car for our first? Ken

Some advice please
I belive anvils are few and far apart in OZ. Sounds like you called for pics. Hard to say without pics Welding heat should not have traveled far from the weld. Even if only half the face is good it would be huge. I would probably go for it if price and travel is not a problem. Ken

Coal/coke vs charcoal or wood
While I run a gasser, I grew up with a coal furnace. Coal is NOT coal when it comes to smithing. Heating coal can be used but if you want the best buy smithing coal or coke. I have to wonder at the # given. 4000 btu per lb. So I get 16000000 btus per cord of oak. Cord is 4000lbs 128cu ft. Used to burn canal coal about a cubic foot per chunk in furnace not forge. Ken

where did the work go?
I think one of the biggest things I face is. The road side sellers selling import gezabos 12'dia. 8' Tall with leaves and scrolls for $375. I can't do the welding for that. or buy enough 1/4" rod. Yeah outsourceing. After 8 yrs the shop is nights and weekends now. Arteys not buying, Farmers not fixing. And the overhead goes on. Ken

TIG Tricks
Question would be how low will your tigger go? We used to do that at .5 amps with a foot pedal DC streight. Here is a better one to try. butt weld .0005 wire. Or weld inside .010 OD tubing(thermocouples) Need young eyes and a 40-80X microscope. Ken

Welding Certification?
Mine were far north and far south. Did have a welding engineer one time tried to horn in on a photo op. I set up a plasma welder for Ti(big bag rig) As soon as the cameras arrived he pushed me out sat down picked up the torch. I flipped on the pilot last seen doing 0-60 down the main asile. Found out he was the bosses son in law. Ken

What do you guys think about this unit?
Not only goes for the brand. Goes for consumables and parts. Bought an old 350 hypertherm plasma cutter as a spare. Owner thru in a bunch of tips and electrodes(aftermarket) about 1/10 the life of hypertherm OEM. If it sounds too good its probably xxxx. Ken

Circular Saw Motor....can I use it to build a buffer?
Belt or streight drive? I have had both. Steve is right on if its streight drive. If its a 2to1 belt drive its closer to 1725. Ken
