  1. I wana know why Velegshi accuses us of brushing him off?
  2. I have used Ni-Chome alloys many times in my damascus, L6 and sometimes 8670, even a few stainless steels, and they all work different, and strength depends on the heat treat used
  3. TP could you please wear a Go-Pro when you do go for entertainment value to the rest of us?
  4. too much O2 can kill your hypoxic drive
  5. Actually the briquettes WILL work for this
  6. I am not sure what your photos are supposed to be as you used non standard formats. so I hope you had fun at least
  7. I use my offset smoker for tempering swords, I add/remove coals as needed from the floor of the food holding area, not the fire box, to get my digital BBQ thermometer to read the correct temps its not rocket science, really it isnt, tempering cycle is a few hours so a few minutes above or below the desired temp is not a problem, if it gets way to hot remove the blade or open the lid to cool it off until temp drops... then resume the temper
  8. you know Mike is also a smith from Lafayette Indiana
  9. For those that have been around IFI for a while, long time member Fiery Furnace Forge aka Dave got married and had a few children over the past few years of his new marriage. His young wife has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is pregnant with their third child. Here is a repost of his update on the current situation Sarah had a breathing episode Sunday evening (the 17th,) which lasted briefly but was enough to cause us to head to the hospital in Lexington. Another episode in hospital on Tuesday night prompted the doctors to perform an emergency C-section and another lung procedure to clear the air-ways that are being closed by the lung cancer. Isabel de Clare Custer was born Tuesday night. She was 4 pounds 5 ounces, 32 weeks. She is doing good and is in the hospital. Sarah has been kept under since the procedure. With the baby removed, they were able to do a full body scan and MRI. She had a fractured spine from a tumor there, three small tumors in her brain, and compromised vertebra in her neck. They did a spinal surgery on Wednesday and removed the tumor and effected area, and they have put a brace on her neck to try to stabilize that area. If that area fails, she will be permanently paralyzed for the rest of her life. They started radiation on Thursday. Basically every time we get news, it is more bad news. Sarah is on a vent and will continue to be sedated for some time. She did wake up enough Thursday morning to communicate with me by motioning and sign language. For those of you who have helped in various ways and offered assistance and prayers, we are deeply grateful. It is one thing to profess faith, during the good times and another to live it in the hard times. Sarah and I were blessed with 12 days home after diagnosis to talk, share, and spend time together, and process our position together. It is all so overwhelming but the Lord has provided many things to ease the struggles we are going through.....things that have been shaping up for over a year. Sarah and I have settled on this as our theme song thru the days ahead. "I care not today what the morrow may bring, If shadow or sunshine or rain, The Lord I know ruleth o’er everything, And all of my worries are vain. Though tempests may blow and the storm clouds arise, Obscuring the brightness of life, I’m never alarmed at the overcast skies— The Master looks on at the strife. I know that He safely will carry me through, No matter what evils betide; Why should I then care though the tempest may blow, If Jesus walks close to my side. Our Lord will return for His loved ones someday, Our troubles will then all be o’er; The Master so gently will lead us away, Beyond that blest heavenly shore."
  10. try to avoid placing the burners directly on the top like that, it creates a chimney
  11. add t that the fact the OP has not been here in 3,5 years either
  12. Have you tried reading the sticky posts in the heat treating sections yet?
  13. its actually the other way around, the machine is next to useless on PW steels. Files are preferred for pattern welded blades, the Rockwell tester only gets one spot of that one layer, the files will allow an average reading
  14. I had to work so I missed out this year
  15. Do not use table salt. The most commonly used salts are nitrate-based and these can be used from temperatures of 300°F through 1100°F (150°C – 595°C). see here https://www.globalspec.com/learnmore/materials_chemicals_adhesives/industrial_oils_fluids/heat_treatment_salts
  16. No trouble with feral hogs around here, but feral teenagers on the other hand...
  17. Yea Ha, ya did it, congrats, you are now a sword maker
  18. While its a very true statement, 4th degree burns are from Nuclear reactions, just a FYI
  19. The 5 minute epoxys tend to fall apart at the 4 to 5 year mark, as explained in the knife making series. Never use the fast set epoxys on things you want to last
  20. Have you ever made a blade before or are you just jumping in?
  21. not many use a press to make a sword, I use a hammer
  22. UV is at the other ends of the light spectrum from IR. Just using a simple TINTED pair will not block IR, in fact they cause the iris to open further allowing more IR into the eye, dont mess with your eye site, you only have 2 eyes and forging by the braille method isnt fun I hear
  23. so you are saying you want to intentionally contaminate a CO2 tank? Assuming you found someone to do that for you how would you feel in trusting them when you buy a tank from them, as to what is really in it if they will cheat like that?
