  8. Welcome to the obsession. And welcome to the site. First of all, you've learned one of the most important things. Stay away from galvanized or plated metals if at all possible. Other than that, don't confine yourself to just making one thing. Yes, knives are cool. But there are so many other things to make it will make your head spin. Start with smaller, easier things to gain hammer and heat control. Start with the basics. There is a wealth of information on this site to learn from and many experienced and helpful people. Start with going through the forums and reading the different topics. Go through the gallery and look at the vast array of items that have been posted here. From the basic to the very detailed. Lastly, feel free to ask more questions. And post pictures of what you have created. Pictures help us see exactly how you are doing. Good luck and have fun! Mitch
  9. Wow! That is one beautiful knife!
  10. I make butterflies as part of sculptures, etc. The one that postleg posted is one that I did. I agree with Beth. The best place to start is nature itself. Download pictures of various butterflies as examples. Others here have posted different examples. You are only limited my your own imagination. Good luck and keep us posted. Mitch
  11. Good for you for standing up for yourself and your craft. I think you made your point. I agree with Wayne that you should invite him to your shop and give it a try. He will learn just how demanding and difficult it can be. Personally, I do my blacksmithing for me and no one else. If all I ever did was make things and throw them into a pile, that would be ok. It's what I am passionate about and it brings me great satisfaction. My family and friends actually enjoy what I make and request more than I have time to make. That's a bonus. But not why I do it. Enjoy your craft. It is part of you. Mitch
  12. So sorry for your loss. Our prayers continue for you and your family. Mitch
