April 26, 20215 yr Hello Everybody; I recently got a box of these (literally a couple dozen). I handled 3 (long handle; medium and short) and parked them in the garden shed; but how many does anyone need .... Goofing around I already made a warhammer from it, but this is more cutting parts off and grinding some. But it's good steel (I guess C50, as it hardens in water and it's somewhat the standard steel of the supplier), so I wonder; can you forge this thing into an axe ?
April 26, 20215 yr You could probably use the blade for wrapped eye tomahawks or make a froe from the entire thing. I'm sure some people will be by with some other ideas as the day goes on. Pnut
April 26, 20215 yr I wonder what the intended purpose was.? I have used a life time of digging and pounding tools but thats a new one for me. I would cut off the blade and try to forge the hammer end into an axe. Have fun and post some pictures
April 26, 20215 yr Blowhorn stake for tinsmithing? I just got a pickaxe head with the points on either end and cut off one to make a sq drift out of. Any way to trade those for something more suited to your uses?
April 27, 20215 yr C50 in the states is equivalent to 1050. At least that is what the inter web machine tells me. So i would say, why not? I can see a few things. Tomahawk, adz, garden trowel or spade, etc.
April 28, 20215 yr Another option is simply to resell them as-is. I've sold a bunch of stuff on eBay that I didn't need and turned the cash into books, tools, and usable stock.

The knob on the thing could be used to bust up rocks you uncovered.
April 29, 20215 yr Thanks Arkie. I've spent no time farming but have always wanted to be a farmer. Good advice JHCC
April 29, 20215 yr Me too Arkie. Started at 22 when I got out of the corps and became a ditch digger for a pool builder. Between building pools and surveying land, I have swung some type of tool most of my adult life. People dont realize how much hammer work is involved in surveying.
April 29, 20215 yr I could turn one into an adze. Of course if one wanted to do some forging, a croquet mallet for the other side of the Looking Glass comes to mind. A Whack'A'Mole whacker comes to mind too. Frosty The Lucky.
April 30, 20215 yr Tools with grainy finish like that tend to be low quility. I've been digging for various reasons many years and never saw a tool like that. I would call it a mattock and mattocks come in many configurations. Most popular are pick mattock and cutter mattock. Handle hole is oval in every mattock I've seen.
