Thinking half moon shape on the sides? My blacker anvil has those with screws pushing against them, works great, no movement. I did something similar with my ASO and it does not move either.

Ya, marcusb..half-moon pucks on both sides, and silicone or gasket paper where anvil meets stand. 

A layer of silicone caulk under the foot is definitely the way to go. It deadens the sound and helps hold the anvil to the stand. 

Used Dynamat car audio sound deadening material under the Nimba.  No ear plugs required 

That will work.. is your floor one of those floaters? concrete in the floor.. I like it.    did you try it without the dynamat?   nice setup.

New guy here - just joined a few minutes ago and wanted to show off a little bit, lol.

I have no experience with blacksmithing but have taken my first steps into this daunting journey.  

I got what some would call an Anvil Shaped Object (ASO).  It's a "Central Forge", 110 LB anvil.  It was purchased on the cheap and will likely serve my needs well for years to come. 

I built a stand for it this afternoon.  While I am not a welder, I think it turned out pretty good!

I bought a 72" square tube from Home Depot as well as some flat stock.  They had a piece of pressure treated pine in the cull pile which was marked down 70%.

I used an old Harbor Freight motorcycle chock for the base.  I like to re-purpose things and this, IMO, worked out great!  I did have to cut down the length of the chock frame and, used part of the cutoff to make the forth side of the base.  I cut my legs at about 10 degrees or so and welded them on the frame. I then filled the legs with some play sand and welded on some feet.  I cut down a 2x10, set inside the framework of the base and, secured it with a couple of lag bolts.  I used my propane torch to give the wood that burned looking finish.  I will clean it up and paint the frame tomorrow and, figure out how to keep the anvil from sliding around.  I have a few ideas and just need to see if they're doable.

Welcome to the insanity.

Looks good to me and those anvils are, if I recall made in Russia but no longer imported. They were good starters (not ASO'S) should last you a long time with a little care. I used some 10p nails to keep my 110 pound Vulcan from sliding around as a temporary measure. That was 30+ years ago and they are still there doing the job. Since then I forge nails to hold the other anvils to the stumps. Putting some cheap calking compound under the base will make the anvil quite and help hold it.

BTW: I wouldn't do any more grinding or sanding on the hardened face as they aren't very thick and it will take years of use off. Hammering hot steel on it will polish it up nicely.

Thank you for the welcome and the tips!  I do have some silicon caulk I can put under the anvil and will do that on my next days off.

I finished up the stand today.  I'm no welder but, everything seems to be sticking together pretty good and, it was fun.  I cut out some bar stock to fit the base of the anvil and welded a shorter bar stock to it and drilled some holes.  I think these should hold the anvil in place pretty well.  I had some chain that I wrapped around the anvil as well. 

Now, to figure out how to heat up some metal!

This forge is the fastest and easiest to build. You could be heating steel in an afternoon.

The Russian anvils were cast steel rather than the cast iron Chinese ones.  They were a bit soft but a decent entry level real anvil.  I was very disappointed when they went off the market in favor of the ASOs.  Is that NOS; or are they making them again---and if so are they still cast steel?

This Central Forge anvil seems to be older.  I'm not sure but believe it to be steel?  I found it by word of mouth as it had not been advertised yet.  I don't believe they are making them again but I have not researched that deep in to the anvil.  

Was it a private purchase or from a store?  If it was NOS you really did luck out and it will be a suitable starter anvil.  The hardy hole oriented at 45 deg was the tell tale indicator back when they were being sold at HF. 

It was a private purchase from an individual who bought it a short time ago and never used it.  He had just sold a brand new, never used forge.  I think it was a diamondback, two burner.

I expect to see a lot of stuff like that hit the market when the bubble winds down---time to sell off my extra stuff NOW!

Made this guy today. It’s a pretty common stand, but it took a surprisingly long time for me to make!

What problems did you run into?  Were they anvil specific? How'd you build it?

Regardless, it'll be a fine anvil stand and serve you till you think of or find something you like better. I've been there, I have a couple old anvil stands around somewhere.

So the anvil will be moving to the red gum stump?   That stand it's one now would not be great for forging on..

Looks great..  I would however suggest some form of protection for those clear panels in the door on the other side of the anvil. 

One rouge piece of metal or even from heavy forge welding will render that clarity useless. 

I like the stump base..................but then I'm slightly prejudiced toward them.
