Old N Rusty
Today , I did it ,,,I welded a 1- 1/4 " steel pipe ,30" long to a 10 lb. double faced sledge hammer head !! The short piece of the broken wood handle fit right inside the pipe and I welded it with E-7018 all the way around. Using the S.M.A.W. welding process. I am ready to read all the criticism this will get going. Oh,, (horror) the pipe was galvanized! Sorry RT.

Jacques
We have a ball-peen hammer in the workshop with a steel pipe handle welded to the head. It was already like that when it entered the workshop in 1980, is being used regularly and is still going strong. The pipe handle is also useful as a bending tool. ThomasPowers
We see that a lot out here for landscapers using "undocumented" workers. They don't care about long term problems; but do want something that will resist being broken so the worker can take a rest. (My brother runs a landscape business using a lot of day labour and tool breakage is *amazing*.)

jmccustomknives
I'm with you. I built a hammer out of a piece of hydrolic ram (about 12lbs worth), ground the striking face to a convex. It is ugly, but who cares when it does the job.

Marksnagel
Oh brother Danny, where art thou? Galvanized? Really? Did your recent hurricane blur your thinking? I hope you get many many years out of the sledge. Easy to do so long as you are still breathing! PAX Bro
GregDP
Would a vertical slit or two in the handle save your joints or is that a pipe dream?
macbruce
I don't care.......Now if you were to say you welded the galv inside a closet that might bring out the Safety Sally in me but you'd probly cure yourself with water moccasin venom and Tabasco if you got sick.......enjoy your new hammer.......
Timothy Miller
Better a safety Sally than a safety Sam :).
Frank Turley
I think it's OK to arc weld a galvanized pipe to a sledge head. Just put the whole shootin' match in a glass case on the wall as a remembrance. Where does steel wool come from? A hydraulic ram!

Elemental Metal Creations
Well I have a 6# sledge with a short pipe handle but I was working as maintenance in a food factory at the time and needed a bigger hammer I could take out into the production area. They wouldn't allow wood handled tools in the production area, but there were wood pallets every where. Go figure.
John McPherson
Please, please tell me it was a paying job done to the customer's spec, and not something you did for yourself. Where are your standards, man? Or did Hurricane Isaac leave behind mutant junkie termites? I must confess, I have done similar jobs, like welding up 1" rebar handles to 4lb sledges for concrete form workers. And when we both heated with wood, my father-in-law was sure death on wood splitting mauls and sledge hammer handles, so I bought a Monster Maul in defense. (Foam grip covered pipe handle on a 12lb wedge head. Marvelous!)
ThomasPowers
Sort of thing I keep one or two in the shop as "loaners"; won't use them myself as they make my arms hurt.

MOblacksmith0530
He must be a masochist or sumpin. Heck my arms hurt with a wooden handled sledge once in a while when I get it in a death grip, can't imagine the pain in the vibrations from a steel pipe. Dogsoldat
what dad use to use for steel handles on axes was the oval tubing from bed frames. light enough that it really didn't vibrate shaped nice to fit the the hand, and fit into most maul and axe heads with very minor tweaking
bigfootnampa
WOW! I have never seen a bed frame with oval tubing!
