  1. Good time at the antique show. $17 with tax. I think the brass piece is a steam horn?
  2. Depends on the hammer, I always get 8 good strikes before I ping or 28 before I click.
  3. Thanks Das nice to hear and I really like the ridged shape and reputed quality. Thanks Doc, its a winchester rifle I got form the CMP about 20 years ago and I hear you about the ping ooh-rah. I just dont shoot much anymore and I havent seen cheap or surplus ball in years. Im slowly eliminating my collection. I traded off the 1917 awhile ago but will keep my 1903a3 and of course the AR.
  4. Thanks for the info fellows, I must say that im a little surprised that the extra wieght is not really a factor. I have never struck on anything other than my vulcan or a 100 pound chunk of mild steel that I use when I worry about beating too hard on the vulcan. I guess I thought the more mass the more metal moved. Still doing research but plan to sell off an old hobby to fund a new anvil, I'm not broke by any means but I dont want spend more than I get from the M1 I want to sell Gun show this weekend, we'll see, havent been to a show in years but Ive heard prices are good for military weapons
  5. Good day all Purely hypothetical question that I'm sure has come up before but here goes anyway. I feel that I have outgrown my #100 Vulcan and want to up grade to a bigger, better anvil. Lets say I had the money to swing the Ridgid but a good condition PW was available for the same price, which would you chose and why? I really like ridgid shape and size and have read nothing but good things about them. I like the age and heft of the PW. Its not perfect with a few chips and dings but good rebound and no cracks etc. Would #75 be a serious advantage over modern materials and configuration?, would love to hear what you more experienced guys and gals have to say - thanks Pete.
  6. Ordered mine last night - paid retail
  7. Looks like it might have a thin steel top plate on it. I like it and would use it for smaller mild steel stuff - have fun!
  8. Wow! Super nice anvil You should post another photo with the ole girl on top :-)
  9. Very nice spatula. My dad owned a drug store in Willcox, AZ in the '70-80s. I have fond memories of helping count pills as a kid Go Fighting Cowboys!
  10. Yeah but I'm talking a $2000 dream anvil :-)
  11. With 2 hours a week at the forge, its going to take the rest of my life but I like it!
  12. If I were to start over, l would go with a side blast charcoal JABOD. Can be made for next to nothing and you could be pounding hot iron in an afternoon. have fun :-)
  13. E-bay has every size, shape, type and quantity delivered to your door. Might get some small samples untill you find what you like to use. Maybe try some old allen wrenches or hammer bits or axles or ..... good luck and show us what you make :-)
  14. For my birthday, my lovely wife gave me a commercially available burner of the mikey style. With hose and regulator I believe it was around $90 delivered, I then read forges 101 twice. Got the kaowool, cast-o-lite and metrikote from mr. Coe for another $90 and maybe another $20 in nipple and screws but i did have a small air tank and enough scrap to build it I am super happy with it and you could not buy a better one for the $200 ive got in it, took about 3 weeks to finish but was not hurrying.
  15. I found the kast-o-lite to be the most difficult part of my build. I have onlny had 3 fires at around 5-6 hours total run time. I barely have the regulator open and have only used about a half bbq tank. My forge is only abour 280 sq. in. and works great so far. Love it!
  16. Cool! how long did it take to build? Having been stung twice, I hate scorpions big time. I'd want that one to scare off the little ones. Nice work
  17. Frosty - just curious, how well did it work?
  18. Nice work on the cleaver and awesome tribute to your dad! Well done Sir
  19. That anvil has been for sale for a long time at that price, I'd say it was over priced for the area. My local scrap yard has all kinds of shapes and sizes at .35 cents a pound. I am soon to get a big chunk and try a Brazeal style anvil as I am finding my 100 lbs vulcan to be somewhat light duty as my forging experience progresses. Goood luck and keep looking, I got the vulcan off craigslist for $1.50 per pound and its in very decent shape
  20. Very nice. Looks really well built . I got a rivet forge last november but I think i'm out growing it. Could use a bigger fire sometime and cranking the blower gets a little old after a couple hours.
  21. Thanks Frosty, Was thinking striking anvil, my boy will be 11 soon and likes to forge. interesting thought that it might be lead filled. The top is receced and the steel looks like concentric rings, mayb a lid of some kind. The botttom face is smooth. Ive also wondered what the little srews would have been for. Going to look up your reference to forge welding on a dead? surface Dont see many piles driven in Tucson, Too mucho caliche, no?
  22. 142 lbs, Gentleman said it was a pile driver hammer and it is flared at the bottom. Not a lot of ring or rebound and seems pretty soft but thougt it might make a power hammer base or hardy hole or ??? and for $10 figured why not...
  23. Paid $90 for mine. Its a three leg steel model, same blower. Blower was very sticky, I disassembled as much as I could. It was very dirty but in great shape. Couple hour soak in simple green and it works a champ-ion. I love it and it performs much better than my wash tub charcoal forge. After using it several times, I have found that it does have some limitations and am now looking to build a propane forge - good luck
