  1. Been hearing some talk of new anvils with soft faces. I know that steel will work harden over time as in rr track but is working hot steel enough to harden an anvil and how long would it take to produce a measurable difference? Does steel type come into play like high carbon v medium? it would be my uneducated guess that it would take a life time or more Just curious - thanks for the brain power
  2. Thanks for the tip Frosty. Im going to search for more drill press knowledge tips and mods
  3. I know right. I just cant believe there isnt at least one xxxxxx mark on the table since Jimmy Carter was POTUS
  4. Thanks again!! All I can say is wow! I have never owned (or used a drill press before) and I drilled a 1/4” hole in a RR spike in about 15 seconds with pretty much the weight of my hand on the handle. Wheres this been all my life :-)
  5. That is one sweet anvil! Love the horn
  6. Thanks fellas. $100 with the vise. I got lucky this time.
  7. This picture is indicative of its amazing 40 year old condition. Runs true and quiet.
  8. Gentleman said he got it new in 1980 and didnt use it much. Looks like I can still see cosmoline on it.
  9. I also read of other anvils having a small drop at the square horn due to heat treat. Have also heard that it doesn't detract at all my kanca is also dead flat along the face but surprisingly it is very slightly concave accross the face. Possibly due to different HT procedures. Took this picture yesterday. Just messing with the phone camera
  10. Heres mine after about 60 hours. Including a bunch of rookies and kids. I do mostly small stuff but have forged a good amount of leaf and coil spring. The dent was from a full miss with a two pounder. I wish I had experience on other anvils to give a real opinion but to me it seems plenty hard ...........this anvil, it will dent Good luck, I hope all goes well
  11. Thats a bummer and I would definately contact Centaur and Kanca. You must have got a lemmon. I have probably around 60 hours forging on my new #165 and other than a couple very small dents and some nearly microscopic scratches, my face is smooth and you can not really feel the dents with a fingernail and you have to look very hard to see any flaw at all. As far as bouncing a hammer on it, I do it all the time, No abuse at all but I find it fun to bounce my hammers off it and I think I am starting to feel the hardness in different hammers just by the way they bounce. I have also dropped my 1” ball bearing from over 2 feet with no perceptible dent. Good luck and I hope somebody makes it right, disappointing to hear this...
  12. Found in the desert near a bunch of illegal dumping. Only one .22 hole between the two.
  13. Thanks and no. Its a 140 pound pile driver hammer with a holland cone in it.
  14. Mudman - amazing beginner work, you have natural talent Alexandr - amazing professional talent !! TRR - nice job, Im a little scared to try tongs yet a split cross and slot punch. Punched a bunch of holes lately and feel pretty good about it handled a $2 swap meet find. Cut six things and wow! Lots easier that my chisel fun ! Forged and heat treated a little knife made from a broken plier handle. Seems very hard. All in all, a good afternoon
  15. Thanks all. When I unboxed it I was truley alarmed at the noise it made and wondered if I made a mistake. It was advice from fine members of this site that makes a real joy to work on. Its no more loud than my vulcan except at the very end of the horns so far, no regrets.
  16. My hole is very square but narrows down a tiny bit (+/-1mm) about a 1/2” below the face and is straight from there. Maybe a product of heat treat? My 1 hardy tool with a 1” shank had to be graound a bit to fit but that was expected, Kanca lists the hole at 23mm I put a little file in it just for fun and boy is the face hard around the hole! funny that, I have been filing some radii in the edges and the hardy hole and one side of the square horn seem harder than the rest of the edge. Could be anomolies in heat treat ?? but probably me Have fun
  17. Spent a solid 4 hours. Made a water can holder, a shawl pin and hair pin out of a garage door spring (broke one), a leaf key chain and a couple hooks. Plus some general bending and pounding......Good times
  18. I used 100% silicone and was amazed at the difference it made in the sound. The top of my stand was uneven so I pounded a couple of tico nails horizontally so it wouldnt rock when I set it on the silicone and squish it out. Worked a champ see my before and after vids in my kanca anvil post. Added bonus - anvil is one with the stand and rock solid
  19. Thanks Jen So far I love my new anvil. I find the flat horn useful and it is very stable. I did find out that it can be dented. My brother missed and hit the edge of his hammer pretty hard. Left a small dent thats hard to find but you can feel it with your finger slightly. I knew it would happen eventually. I have only radiused a few inches opposite where I stand and not much at that. Not sure how much I want so I figured I would use it for awhile first. Would you knock off the corners regardless? Thanks
  20. Made a hold down tool for my new anvil 7/8”, works as should. Fun to make
  21. One early comment is more mounting related. When I first set it on the stand it rang so loud and sharp that it literally hurt your ears. After researching this forum I set it in a bed of silicon, stuck a $4 HF magnet on the horn, strapped it down and the sound was amazingly dulled! Listen to the short before and after videos. To get the real effect, put on your headphones and crank the volume but it doesnt do it justice. Not only is it quiet to work on but the silicon has made it one with the stand and it rock solid and doesnt move at all. Very happy with the mount
  22. Cool hardness chart. Interesting the 30 at the end of the horn, I would have thought untreated carbon steel would be harder than that, but am admittedly ignorant
  23. Pieh Tool carries the both the ridgid and P-H Blacksmith Depot says this of thier Kanca anvils “check the similarities of other drop forged anvils sold by others” I have heard somewhere that Kanca was making the P-H but cant verify. Sure look the same
