  1. I know you have been around for a while but, have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST I second what pnut & Chris have posted. Your side blast wash tub forge will probably be ok for a while but for the kiln you will want to line it with Kaowool ridigized (at least 2 inches) and use a refractory like Satanite or Kast-O-Lite 30 (available from this forum). The kiln needs insulation. https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/257-insulation-and-refractories/ If you haven't yet mixed up the fire clay mix, just eliminate the cement and it will be adobe which will work better. If you have already used the cement mix just replace it with adobe when it falls apart. I noticed that the picture you posted is from Tim's post about building the forge.
  2. If you google the name on the name plate you will get quite a few hits about it. Looks like a good forge. I watched one video review and it was positive. Probably will need some sort of doors to close off the open ends and a coat of Kast-o-Lite 30 & plastix to finish it off. Running both burners wide open probably will be a gas hog but it's set up to run just one burner. All in All I think ya done good.
  3. Welcome to IFI... Can't help with the furnace, but this will help you get the best out of the forum for sure. READ THIS FIRST Pictures of your furnace might help.
  4. A good read for those interested. The Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths. https://blacksmithscompany.co.uk/history/
  5. All of the tools we take to meetings/demos are marked with MInion duct tape.
  6. Is that where you are from? Like Frosty said, if you edit your profile to show your location, we won't have to guess when an answer requires knowing your location. Welcome to ifi... Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST
  7. Welcome to IFI Kyle... I always suggest this thread to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST As Thomas said location is important to value, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show it.
  8. A bigger tank will help. I started with a 20lb tank and had similar problems. When I switched to my 115 gallon they went away.
  9. That is your major problem. There is not enough surface area for the liquid propane to turn into a gas fast enough at high pressures. Putting the tank in water will help with freeze up only.
  10. You can hook worm drive hose clamps together to make a clamp as big as needed.
  11. I doubt you will get an answer seeing as ah1998 hasn't been on the forum since 12/02/2013.
  12. We used fumed super glue to help develop fingerprints. I can say that the fumes are "nasty". Or as others say toxic.
  13. Looks like your Buffalo forge is restorable. I would start with a 50/50 mix of trans fluid and acetone (good penetrating oil) to free up the rusted parts. I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST

  15. Usually Hay Budden anvils have the weight in pounds stamped into them under the Brooklyn NY stamp. Mine has 106 there and verified by my shop scales.
  16. My wife has always accused me of communicating by grunting. After she has attended a couple of years of BOA meetings, she has picked up on the dialog and says it's a blacksmith thing. I'm an introvert and she's an extrovert and sometimes will say about herself " I'm talking and can't shut up".
  17. We have had some really interesting large clinkers that my wife wanted to turn into art, as of yet we haven't found anything that would prevent them from crumbling into tiny little pieces. Tried spray on clear coat...failed, Decoupage/Mod-Podge...failed, polyurethane...failed, short of completely encasing it in epoxy don't know how to preserve it.
  18. Pretty good looking 119 pound Peter? Wright in the pictures. The edge damage is common and the sway can work to your advantage when straightening stock. I don't see any deep gouges in the fact to worry about. BTW Welcome to IFI...
  19. Welcome... I suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST
  20. I would look for brass/bronze I've found many pieces that were large enough to cut down for bolsters & guards. Usually come from large electrical boxes.
  21. Even if the voices aren't real, they have some really good ideas. (one of my favorite sayings)
