What did you do in the shop today?
Smoggy replied to Mark Ling's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Spent the day so far machining a casting for a rotary table, but as it's only early (7.00pm), I should have time to make some adustment and locking screws before midnnight. -
Looks Like you are making good progress, it may not be perfect but you have achieved what you set out to do. From here it looks like practice, practice, practice..... ok maybe a little process refining......but lots of practice too!

You say the air is exiting via a vent, so at room level yes? What level is the intake air taken from? Part of the job of a stack is release the gasses far enough away that it gets thoroughly diluted with fresh air, just be sure your system isn't sucking it back in, it may not be today, but if the breeze changes will it be tomorrow!
-
Where are the exhaust gasses from your forge going...?
-
What are you going to use the coil springs to make? How long do you NEED the stock to be?

I was intending backing the crack with copper simply to act as a support and fill the crack with braze, which should have taken to the bowl edge, and the copper backing. the copper need not be attached to bowl, but I would expect it to take to the braze. I envisaged you would then only need to grind off the copper outside and any high spots of braze inside. leaving you with a brass filled crack. But.....keep at it......sooner or later you'll sort it.....

Heat treating an cast anvil face
Smoggy replied to CheschireCat's topic in Heat Treating, general discussion
As has been stated, such a cast anvil as you have is next to useless for "blacksmithing" in general. That is not to say it is entirely useless! Some would say it will make a good door stop, I'd suggest it is fine for a few other tasks. It will be fine for light work, a bit of copper or tin smithing for instance. Don't go overboard on cleaning the face, you'll only dent it up again as you learn to use a hammer correcty, which is another perfectly good use for it, a sacraficial training anvil. If nothing else it'll see you untill you can either get the other anvil you mention or find a good lump of steel to hit on. But it is not worth trying to improve it.- 14 replies

Brazing may well be more easily managed from the not having it all drop out point of view. What about backing the crack with a copper sheet and brazing it in from the bowl side, then clean it up?????

Good suggestions above, and from the description and the photo's you'e almost 'cracked' it so keep trying and posting, will be following with interest.

With the exception of a few hand tools most domestic white goods and tools at the budget end of the market have a motor of about 1hp, (750w) ie 4" angle grinder, washing machine, etc, up market a bit and the motors get a bit bigger. But if he can't find 1.5-2hp then a 1-1.25hp is an option. At the end of the day it only means working slower for longer! How much power do you really need, I have a bench grinder here that is only 150w! But a free scavanged motor could get it up an running while a bigger motor is sourced, and there is always gearing and abrasive choices. .....or put it another way, a 1hp tool or no tool, how many HP does your file have! (p.s. just checked the wifes "henry" vacuum cleaner, it's whisper quiet and she doesn't know I use it as a swarf vac......1200w or 1.6hp)

Before I saw the pictures I thought this was to be an inlay problem, it is most definately a fill! Brazing would be the obvious solution, as you have a gas torch. Copper is also possible, gun smiths use copper as a solder to fix the sights to gun barrels using pine resin as flux. I see the biggest problem will be stopping the fill falling out before you finish, maybe wedge copper in and then braze it, should make an interesting feature after cleaning up. Best of Luck and we want to see the pics of the finished item.

Can you not use a motor from a domestic appliance? I regularly score motors from vacuum cleaners, washing machines, clothes driers, gardening tools, etc. some are even stepped or variable speed and all are compatable with the domestic power supply! Kozzy, Thomas....google Tractor Pulling and check out the big boys toys.....half a dozen V8's don't half twist a chassis up! lol

It is common practice In the UK to vacinate against tetanus and often a "top up" jab is adminstered if you are treated for a wound at an A&E dept. depending on the duration from the last vaccination. I can't ever recall anyone in the UK being a victim of tetanus, which suggest it works well!

Very, very nice work, and very good description of the procedure. Many thanks templehound.

Trying to buy this one any idea exactly what it is?
Smoggy replied to B_HOSS's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
Take a closer look at the pic, I didn't see it the first time I looked, Sodefors trade mark is directly above 'sweden' and to the right......PARA???. If it helps, rub a bit of chalk on your puter screen...! -
Welcome to IFI Crytin, Take some time to read the info already available, your question has been answered numerous times, if you read the relevent sections you will also find the answers to the questions you don't even know you wanted to ask yet. Above all, do nothing to your track untill you'e absorbed all the info on rail road track anvils and then you'll realse what you are about to do wrong, before it's too late.

Nice block anvil, and the hammer looks useful. Looking at the weld to the flange on the large bowl item, I tend to think it may be stainless. No idea what it was intended for. Not a bad haul for 10 of any currency!

Thanks Z, for some inexplicable reason Mr Stevenson, despite his prolific high profile work in and around North Yorkshire, was missing from my list! Error now recified, You've picked a good tutor Z that's for sure.

Nicely executed, where did you take the class Z, who with?

If you have a look online you will find the website, from there you can sign the petition, share their video and contact them to find out what the current status is. I'm sure they would want to know if people are considering not visiting the city in case it has been closed, as a compilation of such data could be benefitial to them in their fight if they can demonstrate the debarcle is counter productive not only to themselves and the city but other services, retailers, museums stc.
