  1. Nice work! what metal did you make the cork screw out of? i've been wanting to try one but they usually seem to be made of high carbon steel thinner wire or something. i like the beefiness of yours.
  2. lol I was going to say star drill but i doubted myself. but thats it.
  3. First chisel/bit I can't remember the name. I have a bunch . Iirc its for cutting through concrete like a hand hammered drill bit may be an insert for another tool with that end on it Second looks like antique wheel weight pliers. The hammer bit is to pound weights on, pliers bit and pry part on the end of the handle to get them off. For balancing a wheel. Last one. No clue. Could be part of anything used for anything. Possibly something to aid balancing an antique wheel? Just an "out there" guess.
  4. I think you did an excellent job. looks good and straight, and the lines of it look great.
  5. Looks like a good start to me. I'd try it. Once you get it set up and you start using it you will find things that work well or things that need tweaking or rethought. The basics of what you have will work, And we always find ways to make it better. I don't think you'll need the doors on the front as the smoke will rise and go out the top. As you said your going to try it outside first so I'd hold off on the doors for now. Get it together, give it a go, and let us know how it worked for ya.

    Coat rack

Very nice for a second project. Keep up the good work.

Nice work. I like the tall upper parts of the hooks, and the whole piece flows together.
  8. Probably could give them a little depth/ dimension forging them a bit. They arnt all that thick but it would help. Hadn't thought of that one.
  9. There's an awesome idea. A long scrap fence. It would be a thing of beauty!
  10. Well said Thomas. Tho I'll partake a bit in my leisure while forging, for now. I'm thankful I have what I have and have a place to do it in. I'm thankful for the knowledgable people on here that give their knowledge freely to help us young or inexperienced people learn and grow in skill. I'm thankful for all the hard work of others that went into that knowledge and God willing the hard work I'll put into learning it. I'm thankful for my own two hands and a mind to use them. And I'm very thankful for creativity of others and the ability to be creative. Thank all of you. Oh and the turkey.
  11. Awesome Ian. Thanks for sharing the pics. Love seeing different Beautiful countries and the different animal/ amphibian life haha. never saw a disclaimer sign like that here in the US lol also, only thing ive ever seen blocking a road like that here are deer or turkeys and occasionally my guinea fowl haha, they are good for blocking a road.
  12. I can't help us but it's pretty different. Haven't seen one like it. I do have a longer headed one that is graduated. I'm not sure what it's for either. Measuring hammer? Lol. Cool find.
  13. Fergy, here you go with some regular wrenches turned into s wrenches, if that's what you meant other then just the uncoated ones in general. Uncoated wrenches arnt too uncommon here. These were some no names I felt like playing with.
  14. Ocd is fine and it sounds like you are going all out on this but you cought my attention with your concern for safety/ and your keeping a parts washer under a bench that your using a grinder on.. May want to find a safer place for that parts washer away from potential sparks.
  15. You can ship it to me! My address is ......... Making me want to cry... Wish my scrap pile was that nice.
  16. Nice find. Sorry I can't help on the article. I'd love a nice swage block like that even if most people say they end up like a shelf or table. I feel I could find use in one. Tho I'm hearty and think I could move it about as needed I can see where to some a stand as you mention could help. As far as I've read on here most all swage blocks arnt like anvils and don't usually have makers marks. Some can tell from the design or shape but all in all if you can use it do so and be glad it's there. .
  17. Mobile is what youre capable of moving. If you want it bench mounted then just raise it up with wood. Easy and simple. Just personally I've done it both ways and like em on a sturdy stand but still keep one on a bench too. Try stuff out and share your findings. There is always more then one way to skin a cat. ( still don't know why that's a saying anymore if ever)
  18. If you want it on the bench, if it were mine i'd use a hard wood spacer and longer bolts. Or you could do as Charles suggests and mount it on a dedicated stand.
  19. I had thought about using a vent fan when i was initially starting to build my forge, and ended up not needing it. i was also concerned about ash and soot building up on it and killing the motor. Pictures of what your trying to do would be a great help for others on here to understand what you are trying to do exactly. some things to think about are the air draw. once the vent tube warms up the air will be drawn out. 12" is a good size vent pipe. other questions are how big is the opening in the barrel? the bigger the opening the less draw. also think about how your routing the pipe. the more angles and sharper angles will hurt the draw as well as the longer the pipe between the angles since you said your venting out of a window. also the heigth of the pipe outside. it needs to extend at least 4' taller then the peak if the roof IIRC.(You Will want to check codes and such on that one) i found some good info when i was building mine on a site google beautifuliron, info under under forge and fire. so with pics or more info i think some others could help more. i wanted to vent out a window as well but it didnt work out for me with what i tried and ended up with 10" pipe going thraight up through the roof. it works great and if i had to do over again i think i'd only change to 12" pipe.
  20. Thanks Ausfire. It's alway nice getting lucky enough to get multiples of things. Doesnt happen too often. Other times you can match stuff up close enough. I can't say it's perfect welding but I've had pretty good luck welding some cast with my Lincoln 135 mig and .023 - .025 wire. I cut sides of a gear once to make a battle axe, turned out the gear was cast. I fought through the project and with a bit of work it turned out pretty darn solid.
  21. yup and if i remember right Frosty recommends Trewax. he sais they use it on bowling alleys and those take one heck of a beating. he sais to apply it and "hot cup of coffee" temperature. it's worth trying stuff out and see what works best. heck try some stuff and show your findings here, it could be educational for everyone. Realized i hadn't said it yet.... Beautiful ring.
  22. Nice work! do a bunch and you'll get better about every time. you were getting some stem cracking in there maybe it looks like. this post helped me out with avoiding that more. Keep it up, and i hope this helps a bit. http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/43803-avoiding-leaf-stems-breaking/#comment-451736
  23. it's likely with all the steel work done in the pittsburgh area.
