  1. Thanks Dave. I'll keep my eyes and ears open. Lol BigGun. That raven has been waiting a long time. Thats a serious bbq trough Thomas.
  2. That will be the clean way to do it or just cut through with a cutoff. I have a bunch of critters in the works. Some are waiting for that right part to come along and some for motivation/inspiration. There's a cat like critter that has been lounging on the back of my welding table or on the shop floor for some time now lol. I have feelers out for more bicycle chain and it's looking promising. That stainless conveyor mesh is great for grills. I know someone who used a big piece for a half 55 barrel grill. They gave me a piece of it as well. Those other bigger chains sound fun.
  3. Most if not all parts to make a forge like that can be sourced cheap if not free. It is a little easier to assemble if you have a welder but can be done without as well without much effort. Going through the solid fuel forge section and reading the pinned posts and going through the rest should give you a good idea of how simple it can be.
  4. More like timing chain. It has smaller pins and the chain break can't clamp on it or pop the small pins.
  5. Welcome aboard Northland73. Sounds like you have an idea. Next you plan. There are many ways to build a small coal forge. Find what will best work for you and what you plan to make. If you are like us at all, once you start you'll be hooked.
  6. Welcome to the addiction. Thats a nice looking little knife there. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
  7. Here is the start of an Armadillo. last night I forged the claws and started the ears out of pipe. tonight I started assembling the head. still a long way to go and I really underestimated how much bicycle chain I had. I will have to hunt down more. The legs will be valve springs. the rest of the head is a steering u joint and some large valve keepers and some sort of cutter blade. More to be added there as well. I have some tin to shape so that I can weld the chain from the backside for the body. I will cross my fingers that it turns out well.it helps that I picked up a chain buster in my travels. tho it dosnt work on the gear chain I plan on using for the joints in it's mid section.
  8. Thanks seldom. I will have to double check tomorrow if they Are tapered. Interesting. I wasn't looking for that. what would the studs be for? Ice, mud?
  9. ok, Serpy it is! lol. I love naming things with character. vehicles, tools, Things, whatever. don't like to watch myself work, just like doing it. I can see what you mean tho.
  10. Might be it BigGun, but I'm baffled as to how it'd work.
  11. Cool iron poet. Hmm... The Iron Poet can't come up with a name? How about serpy? Nice work. I'm no poet
  12. Refound this " strange to me" horse shoe that followed me home from an auction or something years ago. Made by Phoenix I guess and has DRAFT 4F at the tip. What kind would this be? I'd guess for a draft horse. It's about 6 3/8" long and 5 3/8 wide.
  13. 51Papy, it takes practice. They take me some time to make. I have made at least 17 now and the way things are going I will have a lot more to make. Good luck with yours. Be sure to post your efforts.
  14. If you have a welder I would think you could cut a piece of pipe the size you want the sweep to be and cut a section in half and weld it to other stock on the sides and to a base to use as a swage shape.
  15. BigGun, they really seem get the point across. I dull the tips just a little.
  16. Nice work Dylon. I like the way you have it hung and how it holds the striker. Don't know if it was the one I made a little while ago but if it was it wasn't originally my idea I just made my own take on it as you have. Good job, I hope it does well for the charity.
  17. That is neat. Best practice I have heard is to work with the steel that you intend to use so you get used to how it moves. Rebar will act a lot different under the hammer. My personal thought Is if you are going to spend the time making a knife you are better to use the good steel in case you make a good one. Then it will actually be a good knife and not a mystery steel blade with unknown quality. Plus you will be able to improve on the steel you intend to use as far as heat treat etc. Just my 2cents.
  18. Please leave that beautiful anvil be. It is absolutely perfect as is. what can't you do on it as it is?
  19. No way tangledriver. spalling cattle I would not want.
  20. My cousin, who does wood work, was over this weekend. He had a wood branding iron in mind and sketched out. So we made it happen. It is a lotus flower outline.
  21. Slag, thanks for the link. I will be sure to get it out to my woodworking friends.
