  1. I am with you Spanky Keep that cold Where it belongs way up north!
  2. Farmweld when were you here in Texas looking at my anvil? It is not for sale!!! But I must agree with you PW original owners were all chisel sharpeners Mine has all the same grooves and cuts all over the feet. I thought mine was the only victim!
  3. Before you remove the bronze bearings or any part related center punch witness marks on it and the adjoining part. Such as a punch mark an the casing and a punch mark in line on the upper bearing. The next part removed gets two punches. Pencil, ink, or paint identifiers on old equipment won't last they rub off. This will save you days of frustration during reassembly. They must be indelible. They may be already there -- you just need to look.
  4. The loafing shed I had my shop in had hinged push out windows on the north side. Kept the cold and heat out. You will enjoy your work shop especially with electric.
  5. I did the same thing. Went to a lift shop and asked. He went to his storage area and handed me 2 new leaf springs and 2 new coil springs. How much -- free! Then told me who else to ask.
  6. Mr. Powers In don't know anything about computers but there is no lag when I am on the forum. Am I missing something? My wife had to teach me how to shut it off without un- plugging the dang thing! I do enjoy your posts. Keep up the good help sir. My pet peeve is my wife says I can do these projects after we move and sell the house we are remodeling while she does her hobby of cross stitching. I am soon to be 71. It is tight quarters in a casket!
  7. Happy new year to all forgers and may God bless you with prosperity and good health!!
  8. Welding overhead while laying in fire ants sucks is all I can add. Have a Happy New Year!
  9. First I have never rebuilt or used a power hammer. But have rebuilt many aircraft landing gears The bore should be clean of pits, however from a practical view point you are not falling out of the sky! The bore pits are good oil traps. The piston face should be cleaned up and the gasket area. Clean the rust and treat with a chemical Parkerizing corrosion control.
  10. I wouldn't waste a good cast iron skillet like that one. Keep it in the kitchen or for camping. If you can't afford a cast fire pot take a picture to a self employed welder near you and ask if he has some scrap to fab one. 1/8 material will last long enough until funds are available to buy a cast one. Please don't ruin a good cast iron skillet. Am I paranoid or what!! This won't be your "forever forge."
  11. When you are old and can't hear the birds outside the two things one will learn --- 1 Hearing aids are expensive --- 2 They don't work all that well.
  12. Yea I have been thinking about turning an old hammer into a cane handle. 70 almost 71 sucks for the plans I had in later years!! I have an old Heller 4ozs I bought back in the 60ties. The old race car mech I worked with showed me how to use it as a weapon holding onto the head. Never had to use it that way. But utilizing a cane I might try to incorporate a dead blow harbor freight hammer. However I try real hard to never put myself or wife in harms way.
  13. They look good to me Charles. My Christmas present was a bag of coke and Asperys book #3.; Learned a lot reading the book. Wife didn't know I was buying my own Christmas present when we were in Arizona The refrigerator was a bah humbug since I got the payments!
  14. I love the smell of green coal when lighting the forge. Not as good as bacon. but is a close second. but I don't stand near the smoke Just smell it from a distance.
  15. When I was in Arizona on 10/27/2014 I stopped at the Camp Verde store and got a bag of coke for $34.60 plus tax and hauled it back to Texas. Didn't need it but what the hay!
  16. Well we got the refrigerator delivered Wednesday morning. One week late. Nothing like camping at home with ice chests when we could have been camping for real. However the old saying is still true --- When Mom is happy everyone is happy!
  17. Been praying here also Frosty. I have a standard gag gift for surgery convalesants. A long bristle scrub brush! The first one went to my brother in law.
  18. Well the new one won't be here until the 17th. Salesperson at HD lied about last Wednesday. However I do remember seeing many old ones with the coil on top sitting in garages and workshops in the eighties still keeping beer cold. My take on machine longevity is it only works for Wall street!
  19. Well the new one is $100 cheaper than the 1995 refrigerator. Not sure if we won or lost on inflation! Delivery date Wednesday. was going in my new shop when we move -- no cold ones till then??
  20. Our refrigerator is not cooling any more. Cleaned the coil and exercised (cleaning the contacts) the temp knob. Going to go buy another one today. Dang thing only lasted 19 years. My large forge, PW anvil, post vices assorted tongs are ageless. They will still be going strong generations from now!
  21. feel you pain . However it is looking first class!
  22. I was once tasked with the responsibility of training a young guy how to do his job. It did not go well. He had no drive to excel. At the time I had a sign reading " If all else fails lower your standards" I put it up between our work stations as a joke and a prod. That didn't work either when a customer saw it. However over the years I trained many young guys. Some made it and some didn't. The dilemma is in your personal drive to excel. A rose will grow to its maximum historical potential, A human can drive him/her self beyond historical background. Jackues I enjoyed your read very interesting
