  1. Hey fellows! Last weekend I visited Joe to pick up a new military style portable forge I bought from him. We took this occasion to also work together for one day. Matt charged us to forge a rounding hammer for him and that fit very well because Joe wanted me to show him how to forge one anyway. I myself was taught by Alec how to forge them and he learned it from Brian... so it was basically forged with the techniques Brian Brazeal teaches at the moment. The hammer was forged out of 40mm car axle steel, the billet was 8cm long. After grinding it weighs 790g (1,75lbs) and is now ready for heat treatment. After that and a final polish it will be shipped to the US where Matt will hopefully have a lot of fun with it :). Right side with my initials (Daniel Lea): Left side with Joe´s initials (TechnicusJoe): Bottom side with shoe shining: top side Unfortunatly there is no video of the entire process :(, although there might be some shreds of video coming up soon ;). Yours - Daniel
  2. Hey Fellows! Today I practiced for making a candle holder that I have in my mind. I made a cross inspired by the cross type explosions from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Two tapered bars, slot punched, drifted and riveted together with a 12mm square rivet. Then placed on a wooden log. Here again with more light from the front: I hope you like it! Yours - Daniel
  3. Many thanks to both of you! Yes Alec is a very good teacher, co-worker and friend! Yours - Daniel
  4. The difference between my arrow head and the Agincourt head is not too big... just a little bit longer and flatter taper...
  5. Thank you Frosty! Yesterday I made a video about a european arrow head: http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/31505-video-forging-a-european-arrow-head/. These tanged ones are much harder to make than the socketed ones so a video about them will follow soon, but not immediatelly.
  6. Hey fellows! This is me forging a European style socketed shorter bodkin arrow head for target practice. I was making these arrow heads for my own needs because I am building some arrows at the moment. In the end of the video you can see some other heads alongside with the one I forged, inter alia also a Manchurian style tanged arrow head about which I am soon going to make a tutorial video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=TiouujzZ2ws This video is more of artistic nature, but I show all steps, so it also services as tutorial as well. You can also see a picture of the arrrow heads I made along with the one in the video as an attachment to this post. Your - Daniel
  7. Hey fellows, another video of Alec and me, this time forging a 1 1/2 inch fuller. This fuller was forged to finish mainly with techniques of Brian Brazeals teaching. This fuller already served me very well with my current projects! I was directing and Alec struck for me, while navigating me through the different steps, so I learned how to direct this tool. I hope you enjoy the video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=2ShMHn_ofV0 Please take to note that I waived to use any rendered effects or fancy transitions in this video and it is basically a raw cut of all heats we recorded. You can see the fuller on the left hand side: Yours - Daniel
  8. Hey fellows! Here I am forging an edge tool together with Alec Steele while I was visiting him at his place in North Norfolk, England, United Kingdom. The tool was forged to finish from a piece of car axle. I directed while he struck for me; instructing how to make it at the same time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yo6wTWRvbnM&feature=youtu.be Yours - Daniel
  9. Hey fellows, here you have a little sketching about how to forge a Qing target arrow head used in traditional manchu archery. A video in which I will show the technique put into practice will follow soon. I have to admit I am a better smith than an illustrator ;-). Yours - Daniel
  10. I am glad that you like my little guide. As soon as the weather allows it I will show these steps put into practice in a video.
  11. Hey fellows, here is a little guide I drew on how to forge a tanged arrow head in 9 steps. A video will follow as soon as will be able to make one. Have fun! - Daniel
  12. You mean it will be like when a ballerina makes a pirouette and then pulls her arm closer to the body to gain speed? Good idea, thank you!
  13. Here is a video in which I am using the tongs to forge the bottom anvil tool also to be seen on the picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gkTCQmjz4qQ
  14. Hello. And a merry christmas from Germany! Yesterday I was in my forge again :) - finally after two weeks of no forging :( - and completed my pair of tongs and a bottom swage with help of the new tongs. The tongs are based on Toby Hickman´s way of making them, that was adopted by TechnicusJoe for hand hammering and welding on the rains in this video of him. The jaws, the arch and the boss are forged out of 20x10mm (0,8"x0,4") flat bar mild steel and the rains are forgewelded on 10mm (0,4") round mild steel. The bottom swage is forged out of 40mm (1 1/2") cold rolled 1045 tool steel quare stock. You all have a good day! Yours - Daniel
  15. Thank you beth I am really motivated to keep up my work since so many people seem to enjoy what I do. When I can already pass on that very little knowledge and experience I gathered in the year I am forging yet to people that are keen to learn and interested in the craft it really fills me with joy.
  16. When you can still forge with 70 it is a gift anyway! Some people have to give uo in their 30s...
  17. Very cool Eric, make some more of them and you can sell them for sure! Btw it looks more natural when the head faces down a little bit more... thumbs up for that one!
  18. Hey pals, just me forging an over kill nail to practice both tapering large stock material and striking/upsetting in a swage block: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=LrYuATVaeTE As always a high-res picture of the finished product: Yours - Daniel
  19. For anybody that wants to know how to make the punch for the eyes of the rams head I made this little tutorial: http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/30595-video-tutorial-how-to-forge-an-eye-punch/
