  1. I got an amazing gift recently. I got a Hardy/hardie tool bench. It came with 4 pieces. One is a Blowhorn I know that... there's a spike that im pretty sure has nothing to do with it and 2 items that cannot be used in the bench. One of the two, looks to me, like a removable Anvil horn, the other is a long rectangular object with a step in it. Both are horizontal fits and both have a round, male insert with two flattened or "keyed" sides, unlike other vertical that are tapered square/rectangle. There are no stamps or markings. Can you help me identify the 2 and possibly the spike? I am also interested in finding corresponding pieces for both bench and unidentified tools. I am new to blacksmithing, just getting the final pieces together to really start. I appreciate any help you guys can give. I've tried for days looking up different words to identify the 2 with no luck in the slightest. He'll, I honestly don't know what I'm looking at with these 2 specifically. They could be for something entirely unrelated. Anyways, thanks again guys!
  2. I am looking for a small-medium sized swage block. It is not an urgent search but if anyone has one that they want to get rid of. I need it to have a 1" hole so i can make hardies and i would like it to have V's on one edge. thanks Josh
  3. Hey all, I just picked up this 5th foot colonial anvil this afternoon, appears to be stamped 1-1-2 (circle) giving a stone weight of 142# bathroom scale says 143# so that checks with chart. Not sure what the circle means other than perhaps an inspectors mark or added by an owner over the years. Looking for any additional info. Thank you all in advance.
  4. I'm new to forging. I watched lots of videos and read plenty of material before I decided to try this. I figured a cinder block would hold up to the temperatures required, albeit only one time. Sure enough, it worked. I made a knife from a railroad spike (a fun, and simple, first project). It uses a hairdryer and steel pipe, fed into the bottom of the block, which I chipped out and sealed with clay from my yard (virginia has excellent clay in the soil). It was filled with cheep walmart charcoal. The first tie was left in the coals too long and liquefied out of the bottom of the block, but after I played with it a bit I made it work! I just wanted to share this, it was made for free. And even if you had to buy everything new it would still only be a few dollars.
  5. I've been searching for a good swage block, especially one with triangular grooves. I have found a few places that sell them like Pieh or Saltfork but they aren't quite what I'm looking for. Searching on craigslist is hopeless in my area, and ebay is killing my soul. Would it be advisable just to have the pattern I have in mind custom cast? If I go that route, I'd be able to make it exactly how I want, but it would more than likely cost me dearly. I'd be quite happy if anyone had any good leads to follow up on.
  6. I've just purchased this interesting block, obviously it's some kind of swage block but has a anvil look about it also Any ideas of its use? It came from the far north of Scotland It came with this other block, again an interesting block, both weigh around 90kg each
  7. Hello. And a merry christmas from Germany! Yesterday I was in my forge again :) - finally after two weeks of no forging :( - and completed my pair of tongs and a bottom swage with help of the new tongs. The tongs are based on Toby Hickman´s way of making them, that was adopted by TechnicusJoe for hand hammering and welding on the rains in this video of him. The jaws, the arch and the boss are forged out of 20x10mm (0,8"x0,4") flat bar mild steel and the rains are forgewelded on 10mm (0,4") round mild steel. The bottom swage is forged out of 40mm (1 1/2") cold rolled 1045 tool steel quare stock. You all have a good day! Yours - Daniel
