  1. welcome to the nut house. there are lots of folks from ny here
  2. i have one of those little darlins as well. going to mount it so that i can put it in my main vise and have different angles for working
  3. always thought i needed to have a swage block. finally got one with our group from the salt fork folks. nice block, even made a bracket to hold it on my anvil. have had it nearly a year and have used it one time. im sure i will use again and more but so far has not been the case.

  5. i generally start the wood stove in the morning when i go out feed my horses. after an hour or so the shop has most of the chill taken out of it and then i steal wood coals to start my forge. as frosty says, "easy, peasy". '
  6. only thing i do is put a heat lamp over the slack tub. work in the shop most of the winter with a wood stove providing heat,
  7. dont see any hammers, but see some flatters,hot cut, punch/drift. small vise is a wagon tongue vise. nice haul.
  8. when i demo to students i always use thier hammer for just that reason thomas

  11. years ago when i was a sub mail carrier in southern wisc. one of the people on my route had problems wirh kids , cars and baseball bat on his mail box. the cure was 8 inch well casing buried 4 feet and complete mailbox made that way.. matto, nice job.
  12. I use 1/2 inch rebar and used horseshoes to make large sunflowers. All of the no good stuff. The rebar does take a bit of heat to forge the point that goes in the ground tho. Havent had any of the mentioned problems either.

  14. had a good day at an auction today, tho it was rather damp. an adjustable stand, 40 feet of 1/2 rebar, a halogen shop light and a 5 1/4 inch post vise. $60.
  15. ns, we used to call it thinning out the defective gene pool. nobody thinks about the train crew in those situations at all
  16. projects from horseshoes are endless, after all it is steel. i have made lamps, candle holders, shoe horns, hoof picks, hearts, trivets and numerous other things. my wife wants me to make a 4 horse hitch and stage coach life size as she saw in a picture. no thanks
  17. yordo, the next closest group is the genesee group that meets in spencerport, near rochester. we have one gent that travels from pulaski every month for the meeting.

  19. there are a fair amount of smiths in the upstate ny area including a state wide organisation call the ny state designer blacksmith artists. you should check them out.upstate is a big area, can you narrow your location down a bit, dont need your house number or anything like that. welcome to the asylum.
