  1. yetti, nothing wrong with antique stores. I check them out all the time and find stuff that i can use and most of the time it doesnt cost an arm or a leg. nice catch.
  2. looks like perhaps the bottom is being used as a swage block.
  3. your work is amazing. i keep waiting for everything to move and breath. great stuff.
  4. doug started at cornell and has progressed more than any farrier i have heard of. he realy has his act together. i had one of his early books and it was great. when i quit shoeing my wife sold it on ebay. as dk forge said earlier, you have to work with several before you can learn much. i had been shoeing for about 7 years before i went to cornell and it made all the difference in the world. thats when you find out what you dont know and what you want to learn. good luck
  5. although it is difficult to get into, cornell university in ithaca ny has a shoeing school attached right to the vet college. I went there and it was great.
  6. looks like a gold mine. good catch.
  7. Ferrous Beuler. point of contact for NYSDB is: Brian Martens, 1026 Washington St., Spencerport, NY 1459 He is the treasurer of the outfit. We are also having a hammer in in May that should be interesting. Dick Renker
  8. with a little tweeking the bowl end could be turned into a candle holder. it has nice lines but not sure i want to make it so big. just me. keep experimenting its fun.

  10. awesome. steve thanks for posting this. once again simon gets overpowered.
  11. SoCalDave, I make horseshoe lamps and just sold two to the same party. While I was heming and hawing about he price, I really didn't know what to charge, she said don't sell yourself short. I also get my shoes for free for the most part, I buy for special orders, but there are lamp parts and shades not counting cleanup and finishing. So far my price ranges have been from 100.00 to 150.00. If you go to the forum horseshoes as the metal you can see one of the lamps.
  12. i have heard of them before but this is the first that i hav seen. thats a hoot.
  13. nice job beth. interesting designs for the garden. does the sun shine over there :P when i was ther 50 years ago all it did was rain. dick
  14. great picture. while it shows a large amoun of horse shoes you can also tell that other work was done there. thanks for sharing.
  15. And people are educated(?) by hollywood. Did you ever see a movie that had a blacksmith scene in where he was hammering on any but a horse shoe.?
  16. Randy, My background is a farrier as well although I have pounded on iron befor I started that. And I can understand your frustration. One of feeders to this problem is exposure. I gave demo's at schools, group meeting , 4h and the list goes on. Plus when you are working at a stable you exposed to the public even more. So today as soon as someone hears blacksmith, right away they think horse shoes. I guess it just comes with the territory.
  17. looks like a table off a milling machine or a shaper. should be stout enough.
  18. Well after reading all of these anvil topics I decided that maybe this one would fit. I have a PW and have had it for 40 years. Always figures it weighed about 120 lbs. after all the dicissions I put it on a scale and got 102.6 lns. The markiings are 0-3-20. Has wrought in a circle. Paid 40 bucks for it in the early 70s. Used iit for horseshoeing so it was right size to carry in and out of truck 6- 8 times a day. May have to get a bigger one now.
  19. Ian, looks really nice. sorry you didnt win but if my wife saw it she would want it. good job.
  20. i generally keep a small wood stove going. does the job nicely. no frozen water all last winter. this year a couple of times because i didn't keep a fire going.
