Picked up a leg vise
Before I would get to crazy I think I would give it a good lub. There is obviou rust howing around the screw stem and that could also be in the hinge pin. Good luck

Hot cut hardy (What it is and how its used.)
seldom (dick renker) replied to FieryFurnace's topic in Hot Cuts, Anvil devils, metal cutting on the anvil.private entrance, if that trailer ball has a cap on it it means the boltgoes all the way through the ball. in other word its iin two peices. when you tighten the nut you have to be real careful that you dont squash th ball. basically they are junk as far as towing goes. i think you will find the ball itself pretty soft. they are hollow.

ufsh. (unidentified flying steam hammer)
woodyarmourer Sounds like your having fun. I'm thinking that if you run this by steam or air you will have to make sure that either one is saturated with oil for lub on the inside. This is simular to a steam locomotive setup. You don't have to wring it out of the air or steam but it needs to be there.

switching to left handed hamering
When I was an active farrier I could drive nails with either hand. Haven't tried the hot iron bit yet,

Show me your anvil stands
This is the one that I use in my shop now. I have a farrier background and had one simular to this but lighter to go in back of truck. I retained my old step vise as you can see and it is handy. So far it hasn't gotten in the way. The anvil is a Peter Wright about 120 lbs. Picked it up in the early 70's for 40 bucks.

question of corkscrews
Has anyone made any corkscrews? I have had a request to make a couple of corkscrew trivets and am at a slight loss of how they are made. Thanks Seldom

Interview with a blacksmith
Hello from Western NY. I started hammering on hot metal in the basement of home and a coal fired furnace in the middle of the winter. My basic background was as a farrier but did other things as well. Specialized in horseshoe lamps and a few hand rails, but that was 30 plus years ago. Now back to lamps and ornamental work. Joined New York State Designer Blacksmith group a year and a half ago and really enjoy it. They have encouraged me a lot to get hammering. I have done just about everything a little boy growing up in the 40s and 50s wanted to do so now I am tired and retired. Dick Renker Williamson, NY
