  3. I don't. I worked in an old telephone switching office for so long I can't hear some sounds...mostly my wife. I guess if Iwas just getting into blacksmithing I would because the hearing loss just slips up on you...one day you notice you just can't hear like you used too.

I was given an Anvil last night when I got it home and cleaned off the rust and dirt it says M&H Armitage mouse Hole 1.1.25 as near as I tell it is a Mouse Hole made between 1820-1835 weighting aprox 165 lbs. has a few chips along the edge the cutting block has been used also some light cuts on the horn, seems to have a sweet spot worn into the face.

Not having the money to buy a Baldor buffer I settled on an inexpensive grinder with the side guards removed and extra long work arbor on each side I've had it on a stand for several years now I see no need to upgrade I bought my extra long work arbors from Kovel (now Jantz supply) Jantz Supply - Your source for knifemaking!
  6. In the July 2005 issue of the Blacksmith Journal is an article on Tue Iron forges with measured drawings the article describes how they work and has a cross section dwg showing how its lined with clay.
  7. My nane is James R. Davis I've always gone by Jim.When I moved To Georgia the guys at work assumed the R was for Robert and started calling me Jimbob; it stuck...I think its a southern thing!

  9. :confused: On Blueprint #503; about Forging Lubricants; its talking about alkaline salt as a lubricant instead of table salt...I give up what is "Alkline salt" also could you mix it with Molybdenym and get and even better lube???
  10. If you have a copy of Alexander G. Weygers "the Making of Tools" he does just that. I made one up years ago it worked real good! I kept the blade low so if it let loose most of it wold stay in the saw

The Skills of a Blacksmith, Vol 1, Mastering the Fundamentals of Blacksmithing this appears to be a self published book as there is no printing information. you can order it from Mark Asperys web site at Book I have a number of Blacksmithing books this is the best that I have found He shows how to make a number of projects but before doing so he shows step by step how to make the tools needed to make it. I highly recommend this
  12. make a table/plant stand and use a concrete paver for the top they make square ones and round ones
  13. The September guild meeting will be Saturday morning at 0930 just north of Jackson Ga. or South of Covington Ga. there are directions on the web site posted by Mlmartin15 .
  14. some guy on ebay sells a bunch a lot cheaper than the hardware store...some are bent ...I look at them as corrective handles to correct your bad form.

  16. I have a couple of hand crank blowers that I use; I have been putting 10w30 in them, the other day I added some lucas/slick50 type to what was in the reservoir ...you can really feel the differance! :D

  22. somewhere on the web is a picture of a work table made from these plates..if you have enough and a welder you might consider a work table.

    here's a tip on your hammer head; buy the ones with the the broken claw just don't tell the person you buy from what your going to do with it...after all we all know a broken hammer ain't worth nothing!
