  1. Jared, Im not sure if the Tim Lively would work with propane..on a second note I've been reading about wood fired Pizza ovens, the reason I bring this up is they are taking smashed fire bricks and mixing with sand a cement to line the inside of the oven I would think you could do the same thing for a forge. the last time I was at the builder supply they gave me all the broken fire bricks as they can't sell them .
  2. can you use that rod in the lincoln buzz box or do you need the AC/DC welder?
  3. the best I've seen is as the Steel gets hotter the molecules speed up so fast they become non-magnetic...then again if the carbon goes into solution (being stuck in the iron molecule) it is different than steel or Iron at this point when we stop this process it becomes the Austenite...Austenite is non magnetic see this paper http://rabi.phys.virginia.edu/HTW/supplements/knives_and_steel.pdf
  4. after reading more about this the thread should be "Hot Steel does not attract a Magnet"
  5. what I'm getting at is iron when it gets to around 1700' it stops being magnetic. the earth core is suppose to be molten iron somewhere above 2700' ...so does iron stop being magnetic at 1700' and become magnetic again at say 2600'
  6. when you get the answer tell me why the molten Iron core of the earth is magnetic?
  7. use a split cow hide ...you can pick one up on ebay cheaper than you can buy the leather from Tandy to make one

  9. I think I must be at about the 43rd month going on the 80th years ago when I got out of the army I wanted to build a Hawken rifle ... I didn't have the tools or the skills I stared collecting to tools and learning how to use them...I now have a shop full of tools and the parts to make the rifle and the skill... one of these days I might put it together but for now its a reminder of where I came from...same thing here it takes a long time to get it all together you just don't say I think I'll make a sword today
  10. some of you might get a kick out of this http://ktmtalk.com/uploads/posting.swf found it on another web site

  12. you know if you could take bone or wood and lay the knfe down and cut the bone so the knife handle would snap into the a cross to secure the knife in the case it woul look really neat ...white bone and dark knife
  13. Thats what I used for the first one I built ...it will get you going, just don't take it back in and let your wife dry her hair with it like I did...seems they don't like the smell of coal on their hair! I don't know why not!
  14. how about worn out hacksaw blades and banding...I go through a bunch of hack saw blades...I buy the cheap one at HF. they just end up in the trash I guess I should keep them! I guess you'ed need to burn the paint off before welding
  15. here's another nice one on ebay 160174800396

  19. I think with any kind of electric device your going to need some kind of and air gate...I don't know if the dimmer switch will slow it down slow enough...I don't think they are linear...
  20. If there is and auto salvage yard close you could get a motor and blower from the air cond. from some kind of car just use a battery charger to run it
  21. How big is it? if its one of those small things for a fire place it won't be much good. For a forge you would need one two or three feet long and a couple feet wide with at least two chambers. check ebay for a hand crank blower might be able to pick one up
