  1. Yves, Brilliant idea. Well done. A Turk's head knot made from non-plastic twine could be soaked in a fire retardant-water solution to make it less likely to burn or char. Borax comes to mind. But there may be other substances that work better, and are just as cheap. SLAG.
  2. In the end: We are left with memories of loved ones, and become memories for those who love us. May our lord rest her soul and cleave to her. Let me offer My and Margaret's deepest condolences to you, your spouse, and the whole family, in these trying times. SLAG
  3. Ibor, I have to join this thread. The work is excellent. And looks absolutely authentic Are you working alone or are you part of a group recreating historical work? Are you a self taught smith or did you study with a smith or in a school? You are Not a beginner. Welcome to the I. F. I. forum. I hope you post often. SLAG.
  4. Anachchronist58, Once again I am delighted that you and probably a few other I Forge Iron technology and metallurgy enthusiasts (& others), enjoy the posts. It is there for entertainment and information. purposes solely. I never got as far as studying quantum electro-dynamics nor quantum chromo-dynamics. either. but it still is interesting As promised, there will be many more posts as progress seems to be in over drive lately. Would atomic scale vapor doping be a potential method to widen the scope of the new substance? Just a thought. Best regards to you and Sheila. SLAG.
  5. Very sorry to hear this sad news. You, Lisa, and the family are in our prayers and intentions. Hang in there. SLAG.
  6. Michael, Midol has an analgesic (pain killer), and, also, a muscle relaxant pharmaceutical in it. That's why it worked for you. And it works for me when I do not access to another stronger medicine. (for example robaxacet with a.s.a. and methyl carbamol in it.) That is the Canadian name for it. It may go under a different name in the U.S. Midol works for both men and women. SLAG. Frosty is right as per usual, see your doctor, but midol could be taken before he you get to see him.
  7. Does that make forging a good laxative? I wonder. SLAG.
  8. Be careful regarding T.F.S. (Texas Farrier Supply), They do not mention that the bulk of the anvil's body that they sell is cast iron (although malleable cast iron), with a steel top. Using an aluminum base is the next step in cutting costs and maximizing their profits. Personally, I would throw in several hundred dollars more and get an all steel anvil. Like a Refflinghaus, Kanka, or similar make. The foregoing is my personal opinion, and no one else's, including this site and it's management. SLAG.
  9. ZUT Alors !! Mes Amis, 2017 has commenced with a roar. Can you imagine it? No need for imagination, it IS here Possums. The boffins & savants at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (MIT to those in the know, & those now in the know) have announced that they have made three dimensional graphene that is ten times as strong as steel and 5% as dense. The exciting details can be gleaned at http://phys.org/news/2017-01-porous-d-graphene-mit-strong.html Yet more technological developments should be posted soon. They are coming fast and furiously. Your trusty reporter, SLAG.
  10. Greetings all i.f.i fans (of tech. & metallurgy) Archaeologists, in China, have just discovered a bronze sword dating from the "warring states" period. It is 2300 years old. And it is not tarnished. Check out http://www.foxnews.com/science/2017/01/04/ancient-but-still-shiny-2300-year-old-sword-found-in-china.html A knowledge of Mandarin Chinese will come in very handy for viewing this video. The i.f.I. sub-group's budget was not specifically great to cover sub titles. SORRY. But enjoy . Regards, SLAG.
  11. C T, The balance and composition are very good. And the color contrast all make for a beautiful work of art. I know that she will be very pleased. SLAG.
  12. Isley, Welcome to I. F. I. Scroll up to the top of the page. Find the heading "browse". Click on it and when it comes up, scroll down to almost the bottom. You should see the list of regional groups. Look for Alaska Blacksmiths Association. Click on it and read the posts. The group is very active. You should discover a goodly number of Alaskan smiths there. Also, where they meet. The group has many members in the Anchorage area. You should be close enough to Frosty. Perhaps in walking distance. He is nice guy, (my opinion). ALL the best of 2017 to you & your journey in blacksmithing. Rumor has it that a few of our more enthusiastic members had to be forceably deprogrammed. (NOT). But it is addictive. Regards, SLAG.
  13. Millhand, Nice fab work. Where fore art thou, Bunkie? (to plagiarize Shakespeare). Some of the members may be nearby, and would probably be happy to meet with you. SLAG.
  14. There is a t.f.s. 150 # new anvil for $765, & a Kanka 165# new anvil for $ 989, and an Emerson new 200# anvil for $1,090 And this person wants to sell his used anvil for a suggested $1,000? I guess there may be someone who wants such a "vintage" tool. Are there any pictures for this anvil? Just a mild curiousness. SLAG.
  15. To survive until at least 2018. (in good health of course). SLAG.
  16. Happy new year to all and a great, even better one in 2017. SLAG & Marg.
  17. Looks like a broad axe. Is the axe sharpened on one side only? And the other side essentially flat? SLAG.
  18. Mr. Marinakis, Drowning is a terrible way to die. Please reconsider. I do NOT believe that you are a sadist. (you have a very pleasant & benevolent face. My opinion). Best wishes for 2017! SLAG.
  19. JHCC, I love the Hebrew subtitles on that video. Nice touch. Just sayin. SLAG.
  20. What about "sprockets" on movie film and their wheels? SLAG.
  21. Angiolino, Excellent idea. Thanks for posting it. SLAG.
