  1. Diesel Engines and Water, Water can do a wonderful job of completely trashing a diesel engine. That is why the engine's filter is so important. Should water get past that filter serious damage will happen. Moisture condensation, is thus a serious consideration for diesel fuel storage containers. Water is not as devastating for gasoline engines but it is a serious problem too. Gas stations regularly check for water in their storage tanks. Any condensate water sinks to the bottom of the storage tank, and is detected by using a very large "dip stick". If water is detected, they use additives to neutralize that water. All of the forgoing is a long-winded message, for us giving consideration to water condensation SLAG.

    I hate to ask

Das, Marg and I have added you & your family to our list of intentions. I.e. prayers and good wishes are on the way. I, respectfully, must disagree with your assessment of your self worth. Your posts, on this site, show a lot of concern and care for others. (answering questions, making suggestions, experience, and giving advice.) Many of us have experienced other's contempt and misunderstanding. We practice a craft that is not well appreciated, today, and not common. That's life. Some will come around. But do not let other people define us. They are wrong. Self esteem can be learned. We can do it all by ourselves. (by continuously instilling good thoughts in our own minds) . That's a tremendous start. Incidentally,You ARE well appreciated and understood by most folks on this site. Internalize that, it works. Also, watching another person suffer serious misfortune, and not being able to assist is devastating. That feeling of Impotence It is one of the most frustrating things that many of us will experience in our lives. I have been there. I feel your pain.. Hang in, and do what you can. Please remember that the people on this site (& I) are always on your side. Dan. a. k. a. SLAG.
  3. Stash, I AM interested. Bring it on. Good fortune with your upcoming move. SLAG.
  4. Swedgemon, What species of oak tree was cut down for your table? (it looks like a Bur oak, but that's my guess). I am curious. People in colonial times had a neat trick for drying wood. They used to girdle a tree in the winter, or early spring. Girdling is a horizontal ,circumference cut all around the tree trunk. That cut prevented water from travelling up from the roots and getting to the standing tree. The tree then, was forced to use the water already in the upper part of the plant to grow. All this during the following spring and summer. The wood dried out as the tree grew during that time. Come fall the moisture in the standing wood was much drier. Then, they would cut the tree down. The wood would take much less time to dry out and be usable for woodwork or firewood. Congratulations, you did a lovely job with that table. Take a bow. Regards, SLAG.
  5. Marg and I: Have added you and the rest of the family to our list of intentions. (a little late for this Sunday's Mass, but you all are in there. Hang in, take one development at a time and let time even things out. Best wishes, Marg, & SLAG.
  6. We gotta love the marketers. I saw a large "gluten free" label on a box of oat of breakfast cereal. It brings up thoughts of the manufacturer feverishly sucking the dreaded gluten out of the grain. Nahhh! Oats do NOT make gluten, never did. They are gluten free. Also, the cholesterol free labels on plant products. Only animals synthesize cholesterol. By the way, 60% of the cholesterol in our bodies we made ourselves. Cholesterol is the source for all the steroid hormones our body makes. The horse is the only exception, I know of, that does not use cholesterol for that purpose. Don't take my word for it, ask Charles. Regards to all, Gluten free SLAG.
  7. JHCC And you are in your 5 arm aspect, today? Divali was yesterday Bunkie. Regards, SLAG.
  8. JHCC, Touche! Mon Ami. SLAG. The late great Charles de Gaulle "replied". He wrote; "How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese". America has less cheese varieties. So get out and vote! Respectfully, SLAG.
  9. I. F. I. denizens, Election day is fast approaching. The late great Otto Von Bismarck had this to say about the political process. "Laws are like sausages; it is better not to see them being made". SLAG.
  10. Coal mines in West Virginia have cases of JOY detergent on board. The miners say that it does the best job at removing coal and other dirt from their hands and other parts. This after coming off shift. Just a little factoid for the fraternity. Enjoy, SLAG.
  11. Greetings, Welcome to I.F.I. Please amend your profile to indicate where in Missouri you are located. There may be some members located within driving distance of you. The blacksmiths Association of Mo. is a good group to join. Try bam.org and check them out. Again welcome aboard, SLAG. P. S. I suggest that you have a look at Mr. Steve Sells's knifemaking book. It can be purchased from Glenn on this website.
  12. Mr. Bore, .Could P. C. refer to personal computer? I cannot imagine that he would be alluding to urine. He is a gentleman. SLAG.
  13. Lou the girl you speak of exhibited the howl of adolescent inexperience. Time will disabuse her of her illusions. If not. then she is terminally dull witted. Regards, SLAG. Incidentally, the Inuit term for non-native is kabloona P.S. Please do NOT pick on Frosty, he's my friend.
  14. Frosty San, But are they endangered creatures? Somehow, I think not, SLAG.
  15. Glenn et. al. I remember the phrase as Chee Chakko. Frosty I need your expertise in this matter. Thanks, en avence. SLAG.
  16. Greetings, all I.F.I. metallurgy fans. I just ran into a fascinating article which shows great promise for new semi conductors, etc. Research scientists have discovered that gallium nitride seems to have almost as much wear resistance as diamond. GaAs is already used in the art. But this discovery will widely enhance its uses. But do not take my word for it. Try this http://phys.org/news/2016-10-unexpected-hardness-gallium-nitride.html Regards to all the i.f.i. craft. SLAG.
  17. Do not tempt your wife to commit murder. Let me suggest picking up a toaster oven at Goodwill, St. Vincent de Paul, or Salvation Army thrift store. They are cheap. But pre-test the oven out for real indicated temperature and T. consistency. Do that before tempering your blades. SLAG.
  18. That sculpture is magnificent. Esthetically, and conceptually. I love it! What kind of magnets did you use regular or rare earth? Regards , SLAG.
  19. Coke: if you modify your forge and blower to accommodate coke's requirements. Check coke threads on i.f.i. Use Google's search engine with ifi and coke as your search term. SLAG
  20. Keeping an eye on the obituaries is a great idea. But, may I suggest not waiting for an estate sale, but, swooping in soon after his demise, and offering the next of kin a fair price to take it off their hands. It also may to your benefit to be on friendly terms with the bloke. He might change his mind and sell. SLAG.
  21. K.V.O., May I suggest using graphite to lubricate the screw. It will not grab and bind cuttings nor dirt etc. It costs very little and can be, readily, bought at a big box hardware store or auto supply shop. SLAG.
  22. It has been noted somewhere on this site or somewhere else, that when the old blacksmith texts, (or articles), refer to cherry red temperature they do not mean the color of today's commercial cherries. The commonly consumed cherries of the 1800's and then first few decades of the 1900's the cherries were a lot more yellowish. Cherry red, then, would be e more yellow-red color. It may make for a difference when forging by "eyeball", SLAG.
