I'm thinking a frankentorch do to the mass of it and where the burn bowl is there is a larger set of threads. And the mass of the handle is crazy. The pump handle looks like a wood door knob.

Anvil Identification (No markings)
matto replied to clenceo's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
You will soon here a lot of people telling you to not use it and stay with the forklift anvil. My thought is use it but always hit hot metal on it. It is cast and the face will be alittle softer. Yes it looks like a Vulcan or a badger. With out knowing where it was found harder to get a make on it. But other than not knowing names matter little. Have fun with her and hit her a lot with hot metal and a hammer!! Cynthia is a good name! -
It is called collaring. Dirty smith on you tube has a great video on how to do collars.

Teaching a total beginner?
matto replied to Everything Mac's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
I have always started with hooks. S,j or drive. But it also depends on how they are picking things up. One on one is a little different than 6 or 8 at a time. With the one on one you will have more freedom based on how they are doing. -
Looks like a version of a cole vise, my thought is good find I would of grabbed it!! Handle would be easy to fix.

We are one month away from the Prairie Blacksmiths Association fall conference at Trails and Rails Museum in Kearney NE. Brent Baily will be our demonstrator and will be doing 15 minute projects ( things you can get done in fifteen minutes start to finish) then he will be teaching a 2 day hammer class. Conference is October 8-9 hammer class is 10 and 11th. Brent will also be doing some power hammer work. We will be having one member showing how to fix weld and draw out plowshares. Anyone welcome!!

Ausfire yes it is a metal pipe welded on the top of the head. I will get it cut out and then clean it up and re temper it. Then give it the proper handle. Gote we can always trade something.

Which one to keep?
matto replied to No.4shot's topic in TPAAAT - Applied Anvil Acquisition Technique
Figure out how to keep them both. Look wise you will not find better. It is always nice to have 2, you can put them at different heights for different work. Each will offer there own specialties. If you must have one use them both for a month or more and sell the. One you like the least. But use only one at a time don't switch back and forth during the month. -
Trenton and unknown brand anvil value
matto replied to SFcollector's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
You don't need a sledge, a small ball pien will work. The painted one looks like a Trenton also. -
Buying new anvil. Kohlswa or Ridgid Peddinghaus
matto replied to Northman83's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
What about Refflinghause?? German made -
So are you wanting to know what to sell it for?? All depends on where you are. Most of my vise were bought in the $20 to $45 range. Most all ove them I have repaired and rebuilt. Some places the $125 to $200 range is not uncommon. Really depends on place and time, want and need.

Have fun with the little own way you can they grow up with out you knowing it!! If you are worried about that use olive oil or a cooking oil. You being in Australia and a lot of us in the USA never being there we just want to make sure you are getting the right information. You have a great group of smiths over there. Look some of them up.
