Alabama Forge Council

  1. Started by Chris Potter,

Hello, I have a situation on my hands. My father in law passed this week and used to be into forging and knife making. There are numerous pieces of equipment here that we want to sell but I would like to talk to someone knowledgeable about the equipment. Some of the equipment includes forge, anvil, huge power hammers, stand up belt sanders ect. If anyone would be willing to call me to talk about this equipment I would greatly appreciate it. This equipment is outside of Wetumpka Al on lake Jordan. My name is Chris and I can be reached at xxx xxx xxxx Thanks in advance. Chris

The Athens Forge a member of the Alabama Forge Council will meet Sat. March 23, 2024 at 9AM. The demonstrator for the day will be the winner of the forging contest of a utensil handle made from 24" of 3/8 diameter material. The contest challenge is to forge a handle for a cooking utensil from 24 inches of 3/8-inch round bar. As stated the contest requires only a handle. Of course, if anyone wants to produce a complete utensil from the 24-inch bar, that's a valid entry too. So you can add another piece of steel to make the blade of a spatula, or a ladle, for instance. Or knife-makers can weld in some other steel with the 3/8 round bar. Or use 3/8 round high carbon ste…

  8. Hi North Alabama blacksmiths! I'm only a couple of months into blacksmithing, and have the good old backyard brake drum setup thing going on. It doesn't look like much, but I'm happy with it so far. I still have plenty of learning to do with air flow control, fire management, that sort of thing, and have a few planned upgrades for the near future. However. As I was just getting started and wasn't entirely sure how well it would take, I tried to go as cheap as possible, and that includes buying the cheap ASO that they sell at Harbor Freight. I knew when I bought it that it wasn't awesome, but even with so little experience I've already learned why. I know th…

  18. Hi all, I just found a BSA scouting embossed anvil and need a hand getting it to someone that works with the scouts, possibly on the smithing badge. If you know of a group of instructors in the South Central part of AL., would you direct them to my post in the anvil forum. It has the details. Thanks.

  19. I know I am preaching to the choir here since nearly all of you have known Clay Spencer longer than I have but, His current tooling class is an intensive program that has rewards in the instruction, hands-on smithing and the bevy of tools that the participants take home. The current cost is $300 and is sure to rise with the rising prices of steel. Clay furnishes everything but personal protection equipment and he will provide a list participants must supply. I took home 18 pieces of tooling, most of which sell at meets for $35-$45 each. Clay demonstrates the use of each and shows how the tools cut time and effort in many day to day challenges in blacksmith…

I found a gentleman who sells metallurgical coal and coke. It is the good stuff. The problem we have is most places won't sell unless we buy a truck load. He's willing to sell smaller portions. Anyone interested can message me, I'll give you his contact info. He is in the Mulga area.

Move to Madison Alabama last year. I am new to this hobby and am looking to learn more. I currently have a small anvil and a small home built single burning gas forge. I usually roll that stuff out into the driveway to work. I tried to attend the meeting of the Huntsville Chapter of the Alabama Blacksmith Council at Burritt on the Mountain on Sep 11th but for some reason the meeting was canceled. I though I might ask here to see if anyone is a member or knows an active group in the greater Huntsville AL area. Thanks

  25. Hoping for some advice on tuning a LG 50# hammer ( new style) I just received. Hadn't been run in a few years and clutch pulley was nearly stuck with old grease and would not release. after replacing alemite fittings finally pumped enough grease to somewhat free it. The original 3 phase motor is rated at 900 rpm so it looks like at best I can get 180 bpm with current pulleys. The ram was sticking at TDC until I loosened the top gib somewhat but it still seems to have friction there to change rotation where it is not smooth. The clutch does not grab as well as I think it should but still tries to run-on when I release pedal. I can stop rotation by hand so it is …
