Hi guys looking for some input. I know as soon as someone says it I’m going to have a “doh” moment but I’m lost right now.

No marking whatsoever inside outside and upside down.

looks like an old pair of pincers or horse nippers, maybe a nail puller

Gentlemen,

It sure looks like a nail puller to me.

There is no indication of its size. (that would help).

SLAG.

SLAG,

If that be a size twelve boot in the image frame, I would say about ten inches in length.

Cheers,

Robert Taylor

Only a guess, but they kinda look like crimpers to me.

Buuut, the angle is right for working on a hoof.

Robert,

Thanks for the info.

Then I believe that it is. indeed, a nail puller.

Time to feed it some nails.

Looks like a ready made parrot head to me. Just add a body and some wings

My thoughts too. That's a parrot waiting to happen.

A.R. I believe your mystery tool is indeed a nail puller. We have something similar on display in our Farmer's Store at the museum. We haven't tried it on a nail so I'm not quite sure how efficient they are. Info came from an old mail order catalogue from the early 1900s. Here's a photo:

It's a nail puller, I have a more modern version with a light slide hammer in the handle to jam the beak into the wood. You basically just push the beak into the wood next to the nail head and lever it against the hinge, the beak closes on the nail and you lever it out. The harder you pull the harder it bites the nail. They WILL mar the finish.

Frosty The Lucky.

I guess that's why they were advertised as having 'automatic jaws'!

yay  I was right for once

'Nail puller' images can be had in most word working tool catalogues. I know that Lee Valley Tools displays one in their catalogue and some of the big box stores sell them.

In situations like this it's always best to show photos with as much detail as possible..  Jaws closed, jaws open and then any special notches, cut outs or wear patterns..
