Chris Comtois
So a post vise came up in a local auction site (Michigan). I put a maximum bid of $70, since I already have one in similar shape that I paid $50 for. It wound up going for $162.66! I know price is dependent on location and availability, but I wouldn't have expected it to go that high. What would something like this go for in your area, and did I miss an opportunity or dodge a bullet? stockmaker
Wash. State. The picture is small, but assuming that all the parts are there and the jaws are not bet up it would go for $150 - $200 unless you got real lucky at the auction. ThomasPowers
About $150 here; save that I've bought 4 postvises, (2 of them 6" ) for $60-$75 before. I generally buy one every Quad-State I can get to; though the price is going up there lately too; shoot last year I spent $55 for a working postvise! C-1ToolSteel
They go for more than that all the time, here.
BIGGUNDOCTOR
I pay up to $10 per inch of jaw width. I have ones that were free, $5, $20.

ausfire
That would have been a real bargain here. They are like gold.
Chris Comtois
Wow - maybe I should have bid more then! The one I got was from a fella at our local club - I'm going to have to buy him a six pack and thank him profusely for giving a beginning smith such a sweet deal! Now that I know what they go for out in the real world, I'll certainly look for a way to pay it forward to the next guy.
ThomasPowers
Save your $$ for Quad-State; you can pay for the trip easily if you need to stock up on equipment!
j.morse
I paid $150 for a 90lb. Columbian near Farwell a couple summers ago. I was tickled pink to get the darn thing, I'd been looking for a long while.

Chris Comtois
Well, looks like now I know who my competition is..... 9 hours ago, JT said: actually that was a Indian Chief Post vise. it sold for $159.66 and weighed 65 lbs. plus it was in very good condition... Yep, the next bid would have been $162. Sounds like you got a good deal on it. Are you part of the Midland group? I haven't been down there in a while, life keeps getting in the way. I need to try to make it back down. Enjoy your vise!
Arkham
I picked up a vise just like that here for $100, a year ago.
