Gehljoe Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I am thinking about buying a few nice set of tongs and am wondering if anyone has bought any of the tongs from ether of these companys and if you have have how do you like them. Quote
jacobd Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 The Kayne and son tongs are made from 8620 I believe, they have lasted me despite beginner mistakes and abuse! Quote
Matt_K Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 We got a complete set of the V bit bolt tongs as well as the scrolling tongs in the shop a while back. I usually use my personal tongs, but started using a couple of the V bit ones for making bottle openers recently. I like them. Nicely finished, and they do what they're supposed to. And best of all, I don't have to invest in a personal set. Yet. :) Quote
SpankySmith Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I bought a pair of wolf jaw tongs from Kayne & Son, couldn't be happier with them. In fact I find myself not using anything BUT them. I have others, mostly tongs people picked up for me along the way, but I just keep using the wolf jaws. They're comfortable to use, their design makes them work with round or square stock, and so far I haven't been working on any stock that is so large or weirdly shaped that they don't do the job. ThomasPowers Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 A lot of these folks will be selling onsite at Quad-State a week from today; why not stop by and check them out yourself? One year I bought a set of commercially made Titanium tongs for US$10 there---recognized the "look" in a pile of used $10 tongs for sale...(certainly less of a drive that I will be doing, 1500+ miles to get there...yes it's that good!) Everything Mac Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I've only heard good things about the quick and dirty tongs. Quote
arkie Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I have a couple of Q & D tongs...good quality, I enjoy using them. Quote
HWHII Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I have tongs from Centaur, Kayne and Son, Pieh Tool ( Billy Tongs) same as Centaur, OCP, Quick and Dirty, and Peddinghaus wolf jaws. For me they have all been good quality tongs. It's hard to beat the complete set price of Quick and Dirty, but the Peddinghaus I have had the longest 16 years, and I seem to use the most. Quote
Francis Trez Cole Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 I would go with the quick and dirty tongs Larry is a great guy and he learned for the best Quote
Gehljoe Posted September 21, 2014 Author Posted September 21, 2014 Thomaspowers I have to work or I would be there . I will be taking a vacation next year to go all weekend Quote
Gehljoe Posted September 21, 2014 Author Posted September 21, 2014 I went with centaur forge and also bought a wolfjaw set . however if I seen these post before I might of went with q and d . I just liked centaur forge tongs that have the side v cut out Quote

will52100 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 I've got several tongs from different manufactures, but since learning how to forge my own there's a distinct satisfaction in using mine. Not that I'm an expert at making them or even that good. And I really need to get in the shop and make some more for the different sizes of stock I use. I will keep using my store bought ones though, they are good tongs after all. Kayne and Sons are my favourite store bought at the moment. Quote
will52100 Posted September 22, 2014 Posted September 22, 2014 Just looked up Quick and Dirty tongs, haven't heard of them before and got to say they look very nice! If I was in the market for buying tongs I'd probably go for them. They are nice enough they give me something to shoot for when making mine. Quote
Frank Turley Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Ha! Showing my age. I don't have any store bought tongs save one pair of Off Center which I got from Grant Sarver when I was demoing in Corvallis. I've made many demo tongs for students over the years, mostly flat and bolt, so they are on my tong racks. The old brand named tongs that I have are Atha, Champion, and Heller Bros. Not bragging or complaining; just sayin'. Sayings and Cornpone "We have enough youth; how about a fountain of smart?" Bumper sticker Quote

I ground a "v notch" in a set I bought once, really improved a nice tong even better. Quote
HWHII Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Frank, as always I respect you above all others! But I hate making tongs and I like buying tools! When I first got started in all this the biggest mistake I made was not coming to see you and taking my first class. Then maybe I would like to make tongs! Quote

Daniel S Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 I've got a couple of pairs of Centaur Forge wolf's jaw tongs. I like them a lot. Where in southern Indiana are you from? There is probably somebody at one of the Indiana Blacksmithing association groups that has some different kinds you could try, depending on when you need them. http://indianablacksmithing.org/satellite.html . Big-D Posted September 24, 2014 Posted September 24, 2014 You know, if you are blackmithing as a hobby, why don't you just make your tongs? I love making tongs personally. Everytime I'm able to attend our guild meetings, I make one or two pairs of tongs for Iron In The Hat. They always get a lot of tickets in the cup. ABANA has a two part series by Jay Close on forging tongs here: http://www.abana.org/downloads/controlled_hand_forging/CHF_22_part1.pdf And here: http://www.abana.org/downloads/controlled_hand_forging/CHF_22_part2.pdf Quote

Benton Frisse Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 <------ Evansville, Indiana! I'm a member of IBA, just haven't been able to get to any of their hammer-ins yet. Quote
netman Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I'm from Chandler,Indiana. I'm looking for some mentoring. My work also conflicts with attending the classes. I have made a set of tongs however I TIG welded the reins on. I have been hesitant with buying tongs as I want to make my own but I have come to a conclusion that I need to buy a couple sets myself to get me at my forge making some of these ideas that are bouncing around in my head. If you guys ever have a mini meeting let me know I can bring coal. Quote
Benton Frisse Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Awesome, will do! I bought some modified gooseneck tongs from Kayne and Son for holding RR spikes. They were like 35 bucks and I'm so incredibly happy with them. But I really want to try some tongs from Quick and Dirty. They look really nice. I have an old set of Champion tongs and I'm thinking of sending them to 'em and seeing if they can copy about 5 pairs for me! I think we plan on hitting some of the IBA hammer ins soon. Just between some local demos in New Harmony and projects we haven't had the time. Look me up on facebook, if you like! Quote
