Daniel.85 Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I felt I had made enough S hooks and wanted to try to make something else. My first attempt at a bottle opener did not look so great, so I got a pen and paper and drew out a little plan, then made a second one, here is what came out. I drew out the metal to about 9in long, scrolled one end and made a little flat tooth on the other, bent almost at the halfway point so that the tooth would be about half and inch from the end of the scroll. I then twisted the two together so that It would not be too springy and bend the bottom tooth upwards to get a little better grip on the cap. Quote
Chad J Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Thats an awesome idea you got there! I like all these different styles people come up with. Thats one I haven't seen yet, Great Job! Quote
Smokin' Coke Forge Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 NIce Job! I've not seen that design before. Is it a Daniel C original? I usually make mine by punching and drifting then end of a RR Spike, then dimpling the near side of the hole to catch the edge of the cap. If you can duplicate these with any consistency, you should be able to sell them quite easily. The RR spike openers sell faster than I can make them, so I'll bet you would do well with this unusual design. One suggestion might be to try a little heavier stock next time for even more rigidity beween the jaw and the scroll. Even so, great job! Quote
Daniel.85 Posted March 14, 2012 Author Posted March 14, 2012 Thanks! ya I thought it up when I was tinkering around, I guess the inspiration kinda came from the scrolls and twists I was doing with the hooks I had been making. It is a little springy, I will try to not draw down the stock so much, I was starting with 3/8 square. another angle Quote
Frosty Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Looks good enough to sell Daniel. If you make the top scroll section and the lip lifter shorter it'll reduce the flex. A little refinement and I think you have a fast seller on your hands, folk really like bottle openers and cork screws. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
pkrankow Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Need to leave enough space in the bend for a key chain. I like it. Rather original and creative. Phil Quote
ianinsa Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 That looks great! nice item. it seems a pity sometimes as things go out of fashion in South Africa the bulk of beer/cider bottles now have twist off caps. Quote
beth Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 thats wicked daniel, very inventive. i like the idea on a key ring too - its amazing you can still design a bottle opener nobody has seen! nice one :) Quote
OzMatt Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 That's awesome - thanks for sharing your idea. Quote
MRobb Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Great new design! I like it very much. Thanks for sharing. Mitch Quote
Elemental Metal Creations Posted March 15, 2012 Posted March 15, 2012 Daniel, that is the coolest bottle opener that I have seen. i wish I could think up something that neat. My wife fell in love with it, can I borrow your idea? Quote

DanBrassaw Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Borrow away, only because you're in Missouri too though :) PSST... No one tell Daniel, but this New Yorker is borrowing his idea as well! Quote
Frosty Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Isn't the old saying, Adopt, adapt, undersell? I think Pete Fels is on here somewhere, maybe we can talk him into showing off some of his openers and you can try borrowing those ideas. They're beyond me. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
Guest peter64 Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 very nice work. I think, this is the right work to show in our museum! Quote
the branch Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Fantastic! I think you just furthered the science of bottle openers! Quote
JimsShip Posted May 23, 2012 Posted May 23, 2012 That is awesome indeed. Simple enough to make for an audience and turn out fast enough to sell! Quote
Daniel.85 Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Made a batch of 5, these are a little shorter than the original, I think I will draw them out one more inch next time to get a more graceful scroll and do batches of 2 since they heat up so fast in the chili forge. Quote
