Sam Salvati Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Forged this wok out as a test piece, never done anything like it. "Sourced" some 1/8" thick by 8" wide by 5 foot pieces of mild steel from a jobsite :D. Handle is pure iron. Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Nice soup ladle, Sam. Hope ya got a BIG bowl. :D Quote
bigfootnampa Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 It is BEAUTIFUL Sam! I really like the stylish design! It seems that you'll be needing a ring for it now. I cook a lot and am quite good at it... I would enjoy cooking with a nice wok like that one! Quote
Sam Salvati Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 Thanks everyone! Thanks Nampa! Yes I do need to figure out how to hang it. I'll be making more of these for sure, what do you have for trade? :D Quote
beth Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 wicked sam :) love its side profile... get that skull on the handle and you made a sale ;) Quote
Greenbeast Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Oh man, this place is just a fountain of inspiration. Nice work. I will buy some suitably sized steel in my next order... Quote
John B Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Neat job Sam, I have a question though regarding choice of Pure Iron as the handle. In my experience the PI absorbs and retains heat, is this going to be a problem if and when they are used, particularly on an open fire ? Cage twist may help as a practical solution not sure it would blend with the octagonal pan though Quote
MRobb Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 That is cool! I really like the shape/design. What did you do for a finish, since it's being used for cooking? Mitch Quote
MattBower Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 That's a nice piece, Sam. I'm not sure what you mean by "sourced" (in quotes, no less) in this context, but it's a nice piece. Quote
Randy Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Great piece, Sam. You have a good head for design. Now do you need a tripod/trivet to use it or just not put it down on the stove? Yea, "sourced" sounds like it grew legs and walked over to you as you drove by. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Punch a hole in the handle and hang on a hook! Pure iron does not "retain heat" more than A36 it just works easier longer so you think it's hotter! (basic principle that lacking a phase change the rate a substance absorbs heat is the rate it gives it off too) Quote
Jeddly Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I'm curious about the finishing process as well. Can you do the same thing to steel as you would do to say, a cast iron dutch oven? Most woks I've seen have a flat bottom for placement on a cooktop, and taller sides. I like it! It would work great on a swedish torch out in the woods too I bet! Quote
Sam Salvati Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 Thanks guys! John, I am not sure how the PI will do it's the first time I have ever used it. this is a prototype in a few ways. Boy oh boy that pure iron sure is sweet to work. Randy, I have an electric stovetop, so it's got a little flat on the bottom to sit nicely, sure wish I had gas. in the future whenever I get my own place for good(or atleast for awhile), I want to build one of those gas burners like thay have at the chinese restaurant, pretty much pipe with a ring on top and a burner below it. Some even have foot treadle gas controls! The round bottom wok sits right in them. A trivet would be nice, maybe a long legged one. I seasoned it like any cast iron pan, it's pretty similar. Just put in some veg oil and heated it up a good bit. "Sourced" yeah...........like Randy said :D Who uses suchnice wide pieces of good steel to hold down a tarp anyway? I replaced them with rocks that did a far better job IMO  . Jeddly what is a swedish torch? Quote
Jeddly Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Picture a small cut log quartered with fire built inside. Its actually pretty slick. Youtube has lots of videos for it. Quote
bigfootnampa Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Um I meant a cooking ring Sam... for the wok to sit atop the stove. I will look around here and see what kinda trade items I may have that might tempt you! Quote

(basic principle that lacking a phase change the rate a substance absorbs heat is the rate it gives it off too) Sorry Thomas, my mistake, I meant to indicate transfers heat rather than retain, my first experience with pure iron was with a sample piece about 12" long x 1/2" square (courtesy of Don Barker), normally with the same section steel I just hand hold it, bit of a surprise when I came to pick it up and work it, had to use tongs. Quote
Sam Salvati Posted March 2, 2012 Author Posted March 2, 2012 Jeddly that is pretty cool! BFNampa Oh! yes that would be proper. John, I agree i witnessed a similar happening with the heat transfer, much more so then mild steel. Quote
tzonoqua Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Looks great Sam, nice shape to it, what's for dinner? I lived in a place for a while that only had an electric cooker, and it drove me nuts, I love a good stir fry, just not the same without a flame!!! And I also I agree with Woody, that dog looks hungry!! Quote
Bob S Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Nice cook ware. Make a spatula with the same radius as the pan. is that a dog? :o Quote
Farmall Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 That's a great looking wok....made one once for a fellow to use on his charcoal grill out of a disc plow blade that was worn out. Welded a piece over the hole in the middle, ground it smooth, cleaned and polished the piece and Voila! instant wok. He loved it and still uses it to this day. Quote
