  1. A good working vise with spring and mount is worth $2 per pound and up from there if it is particularly large or in some way unique. When you get old and feeble it will be worth that much $$$ or more. Think of tool prices as money in the bank. You get to use them as long as you want and then you get your money back. Always buy quality.
  2. Nice job on the cleanup. Good looking vise.
  3. I have heat in my shop. Every couple years the wood blocks in the clutch dry out and shrink a bit. I loosen the blocks a little and slide in shims cut from a coke can.
  4. There is a very short video and two drawings here... http://www.anvilfire...r/jyh_index.htm
  5. this is article on rebuilding a 25lber. http://www.anvilmag.com/smith/011f2.htm
  6. some good lock info here... http://www.anvilfire.com/iForge/tutor.php?lesson=jd_locks/demo_I
  7. I saw this link on another forum. Pretty amazing the guy walked away. Things can go bad really fast. scroll down. By clicking the link you are navigating away from IForgeIron and the guidelines of a family forum. http://coloradok5.co...ad.php?t=291529
  8. Why would he care if a link was posted leading to his site? I thought that was the point. Bob
  9. Very neat doorknockers. Great looking shop. Interesting comments by the artist/craftsman/blacksmith. I wonder if he could make some kind of counterbalanced cable system to take some of the weight of those hammers. thanks for posting this.
  10. You may be over thinking. These hammers are not precision machines. Never were. Think farm equipment. Is it running now? If so, run it. Fix it when it breaks. Grade 5 or Grade 8?? Try Grade 2. Plenty good enuf. my opinion.
  11. Very nice! Great looking pineapple! Very nice job on the tooling, the pictures of the tooling and the write up. First rate stuff.
  12. I always wanted to be a procrastinator....
  13. I really need your advice on a serious problem: I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs: if the phone rings and I answer, the caller hangs up; she goes out with the girls a lot. I try to stay awake to look out for her when she comes home but I usually fall asleep. Anyway last night about midnight I hid in the shed behind the boat. When she came home she got out of someone's car buttoning her blouse, then she took her panties out of her purse and slipped them on. It was at that moment crouched behind the boat that I noticed a hairline crack in the outboard engine mounting bracket. Is that something I can weld or do I need to replace the whole bracket?
  14. Potato, You must have me confused with someone else. I didn't sell a 50lber. I would remember that. I do have a treadle hammer for sale tho. Clay Spencer swing arm type. I am not in the Guild but they seem to be a very active group. Good luck with your new hammer.
  15. If you start fooling around with it you will figure it out. There aren't that many parts and it will only fit together one way. A picture should be more than enough to get you started and it will go from there. You have to be a mechanic to be a blacksmith. May as well start now. Bob
