  1. That looks like a very nice old anvil. I would do nothing but use it as is. With experience you will find yourself using the sways and imperfections to your advantage.
  2. Wow. How much arm / shoulder force does that take? Does it wear you out to use? If I could I would buy a new one.
  3. Super cool Gewoon and I really like the decoration on the brooch Mothman. Doing good Mac, thanks for asking. Agree about this post
  4. Thanks for the info George. I might invite my self over next year. We want to explore your neck of the woods. Really nice Lary. Frosty I agree that slumping and torchwork in general takes practice and equipment. My MAPP torch works ok on mild glass and annealing is iffy without an oven. I like the frit on iron idea, I imagine it would stick together in the kiln before the iron scaled up too much. Might have to try
  5. A fly press would be bomb but I am also impressed with John Switzers treadle hammer. Both in its construction and his use of it. I like the idea of having both hands free but I suppose the screw and tool would replace one hand.
  6. Good work all. Love the W.I. I only have a few old WI rr spikes and bolts but they seem much finer grained. Maybe I need to etch longer
  7. Nice stuff everyone. I made another little knife from a new spring. I wasn't real happy with the hardness on the last spring I used so I used a piece of 5/8” from what looked like a new spring I got at the scrap yard. this one was tough to forge and my test sample got very hard. the days are too short… Also played with a horse shoe and sharpened fridays knife. Got reasonably sharp but like I said, does not seem very hard. super fun weekend. Thanks for looking .
  8. Cut with a chisel and yes very hard to do. I cant get them straight and ran out of day light. Thanks Das
  9. Got home a couple hours early and forged a little knife out of some coil spring and tried a 3 tine fork. Both works in progress and lots of fun.
  10. I believe the tool steel on the Vulcans is 3/16”, at least on my 100 pounder. They are considered theFord Escort of anvils. Very serviceable but low budget. Mine works great and is very quiet.
  11. Really cool Chimaera. Love the shape of both and good start with the leather work
  12. Followed in from the front porch. Not sure about the right angle part but it gets good reviews and I have a couple big batteries so for $90 delivered I figured I’d give it a go. 22k rpm
  13. Mi amigos from South of the border invariably call my home town Tuck-son when it is clearly Tuse-on. (Not clear at all) Makes my laugh Belived to be derived from the Tohono word “at the foot of black mountain”. Black mountain is a sacred spot to our indigenous brethren. Glad you are getting rain Thomas. Late june we drove from Durango to Albuquerque and the trees looked very stressed. Lots dead oaks. Really sad looking
  14. Looks like fun Shainarue. Speaking of punching, I found an unfinished split cross under my bench and decided to make a loop on top for a celtic looking cross but i got carried away. turned out pretty cool. Also worked on a blacksmith knife from 3/4” coil spring. Lots of material in a 3/4 spring! lots of fun thanks for looking
  15. I cant afford silver but I have forged a bit of copper and that was very fun in a kind of delicate way. Nice anvil
  16. Some of my heaviest work yet. Based on a John Switzer vid. 5/8” x 5’. For me it was hard to handle and wore me out a bit. The loop could be a bit bigger but I’m real happy with it. Lots of fun and thanks for looking.
