  1. Nice scissors. What is the material and are you going to heat treat? Looks like a fun project.
  2. Nice, my grand daughter and her boyfriend brought me out a pile of MC marked spikes in good condition like yours, must be 12 or 15 of them. They said they found them so I gave them the whole rr property story etc. etc. They good kids :-) Told them to watch Emperor of the North to see what the rr bulls will do to you.
  3. I do all almost all my work on a leather sand bag. I reposition it and make divots and shapes to work in and it works for me for the most part. Good idea with the allen wrenches and bolts, I make my tools from coil springs and old chisels and scraps. Good luck with your class, teach!
  4. Awesome blades David, very visually appealing.
  5. I agree, making tools and using my tools is the most fun, regardless of the outcome.
  6. Nice looking nail header Socks. I added a pipe clamp safety to my treadle hammer a la John Switzer. I need a rubber end but it works great. Makes a big difference to control and I hope to never have to test it for real :-)
  7. Thanks Billy, good advice, and yes my wife quilts and crochets and would really like that. The museum sounds good as well, we have a very large one here in Tucson, the Pima Air and Space Museum and I go quite often (my brother is a docent). I have actually touched 3 different SR71’s and would like to add a fourth :-)
  8. Thanks John, I am looking forward to saying hi in person. Also looking forward to touring part of the country I have never been to. Other than a trip to Florida many years ago, I have never been east of Denver
  9. Awesome! And love the video.
  10. Back to the basics for me today. Good times :-)
  11. I am planning on to attend this year. Can anyone recommend nearby accommodations? I dont think the wife is up for tent camping. I may bring my Fisher chain vise in hopes of selling it or better yet, trading for a 200# fisher anvil. I hope to see all of you there :-)
  12. I quenched some coil spring treadle hammer tools and made some little tongs to hold them. Turned out good and into the toaster oven they go
  13. Nice dies Billy, cool tools John and love the texture Florida man - that is how I feel about it anyway Socks I have also been playing with Brian B’s taper technique. Is very effective but I have found I need to go slow or I end going too deep in spots. Good times :-)
  14. Wife needs a hook to hang a humming bird feeder off the end of a 2x8 beam so I figured I would give her a choice. She chose the lower one for the ‘schwoops’. Lots of fun, started with 1” x1/4” scrap.
  15. Yes very nice rams head. You are a natural. I finally got to light the forge. I am making a spatula and I used my treadle hammer to chisel lines for a pineapple twist, I can’t tell you how happy I am with the new hammer! I used normal hot chisel held with tongs which worked but a bit long so I started some shorter hammer tools. L-R: future hot punch and center punch from 1/2” coil spring and future ball punch and hot chisel from 9/16” spring. thanks for looking
  16. William Tecumseh Sherman is the main reason that the Navajo retain their homeland. He had them returned to their land after noting that they wound not make it as farmers. He supposedly had great empathy for the native people. The Navajo are pretty much the only major western tribe not moved off their native land.
  17. yes. GIS changed surveying and the rest of the world as much as GPS really. Amazing amount of info at your finger tips and every county out there has a GIS site to one degree or another. It is worth looking into as a home owner and can be quite a rabbit hole depending on the particular county/ city system available.
  18. The Brunton pocket transit was a highly regarded tool in the survey world back in the day. Now they are mostly collectors items. GPS and robotic total stations have made the old methods obsolete. Gone are the days of compass and chain, of flagmen and survey parties. One GPS unit replaces every survey tool in the truck and most of the crew. It has also replaced skilled surveyors -true field engineers -with point stakers, Guys that can use the software but would be lost without it. And its hard to find even them. True surveyors are a dying breed and becoming more valued every day. I am solicited regularly by companies and corporations and I turn down work every week. I pick and choose the jobs I want now - its a pretty good position to be in.
  19. Clay Spencers from ABANA that sign is super cool John nicely done
  20. Its been awhile and good stuff all… cool v blocks Billy nice knives Chad welding looks good Socks I am just about finished with my treadle hammer and it works a champ! So happy that my crappy welds seem to be plenty strong enough and was relatively easy to build as the plans and design are super solid. Cant wait to put her to use. Turned out great.
  21. I made the hand part of my foot powered hammer.
  22. Post a description of each anvil if possible, I am always looking at blacksmith tools for sale and will keep an eye on my locale. And dont get me started on thieves and liars.....
  23. Hooks and hangers are great practice items. Bottle openers too, you need to make and use a punch. Punching holes is fun, for me anyways
  24. I have only tried it with coins and found it surprisingly easy. I wrapped with tie wire and light welding taps. A little practice will make you a pro and would love to see some photos. Good luck
