  1. In my younger days, 1 ton pile of gravel seemed surprisingly small, looks larger every year. Got these last night. Proves how little I know of heat treat. Turns out a leaf spring blade which I thought was fairly hard, turns out between 40-45. cant wait to try it on my anvil. $65 with shipping from Japan
  2. Hi Dave. Would love to see a picture of those earrings if you have one, thanks
  3. Nice shop. My county uses aerial photography to look for code violations. They busted my brother for replacing his AC unit without a permit! Sneaky, they take a new photo every year :-(
  4. What Goods said. The horn has a mild steel face that also looks delaminated. I would pass hard on that one.
  5. Happy New Year every one! Cool chain and nice tongs. I took a stroll through the smoky peat and leather of my new favorite Islay style nectar. :-) My Brother always gives me the beast Christmas gifts. This one made it to new years
  6. Nice one. Are you going to harden it? I found my punches seem to hold up better with heat treatment but havent tried it on a hot chisel
  7. My guess is that the anvil and stand are not related. Dosent look like an anvil stand to me, more like grinder pedestal.
  8. Very informative read, Thanks Mac. There is another type of anvil construction that I didnt see mentioned and that is the forged steel anvil such as the Peddinghaus / Rigid or Kanka anvils. From what I read years ago, these are solid tool steel anvils forged to shape and that the forging process arranges the molecular structure of the steel along the shape of the anvil thereby making it stronger than cast steel. Could be marketing hype but I thought I would mention it. I love my Kanka and a 1" ball bearing does nothing but laugh on the way up to 95% rebound. It will put little dents in my mild steel ASO but not the Kanka or Vulcan I have tried it on.
  9. Nice job on the bracelet Vulpine. 35° and 65° for me tomorrow
  10. Nice looking anvil. To me it says STEELED FACE" which is weird but appropriate maybe??
  11. Super nice. I am curious, what keeps those blind rivets tight and in place? A tight fit and installing them cold is my guess?? Really like the odd poker.
  12. Yeah wow, wiki says the Netherlands is 16,000 square miles and my beloved State of Arizona is nearly 114,000!
  13. Thanks TW. I think it was a 1/4” x 1/2” mild bar
  14. Looks like a Vulcan to me but agree with Irondragon that the horn is very slim compared to my 100#. Also agree with Frosty in that it looks unused. Could the 63 mean 1963 and that it had a different pattern than my 1920 model? I think they still made anvils up to the late 60's
  15. Nice work everyone. I have tried several coils springs and find them hit or miss when it comes to my crude heat treating methods. This one is from a spring that I know will get very hard in oil. 1-1/2” blade, 6” total length, unknown handle wood from my wood working brother.
  16. Nice one Will. Looks like my 1980 Duracraft. You wont know how you got along without it
  17. True statement on the hardys. You can make a block to replicate the square horn or a london patterns heel. There are times when a london pattern would be more useful than my double horn so there is probably no perfect anvil.
  18. Yup. What does the hornless anvil do that the horned one doesnt? Unless you are just straightening saw blades or strictly a bladesmith, I would go horned. I find both horns on my double horned to be very useful. Have fun regardless.
  19. Nice work everyone. I started a dishing hammer from an old bolt I found, a seax from a lawn mower blade and a little pendant.
  20. Didnt have a lot of time but wanted to try my new tongs and made these. Lots of fun and I realized that I need more tooling! Yay!
