Anvil identification help
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Buckwheat's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
Welcome from the Ozark Mountains Shelly. If you are interested in selling your anvil, may I suggest listing it in the Tailgating section here. Be sure and read the Tailgating rules before listing it. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -

Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Campbell Iron's topic in Gas Forges
Welcome from the Ozark mountains. I would say not knowing where in the world you are located, Amazon would be the best option. We are not allowed to post live links to commercial sites. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
What did you do Outside the shop today?

My late father in law always said "Three moves are as good as a fire". Our last move here to Arkansas was our second one. We're here to stay. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
Great narrative, once I turned it on, I couldn't turn it off till it was finished. Thanks for it. Saved it in my YouTube folder. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus

That is better than the system I used which was a sheet of graph paper with the scale drawing and misc. notes scribbled in the margins and back, with a printed out picture from my phone or computer. All kept in an aluminum clipboard with some scanned into the computer. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus

Well after all he did host the show from '69 to '97 and it's still better in reruns than most of the garbage that's on TV now. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -

Replaced the battery in the old 1982 4X4 Chev beater truck, we use around the place. Couldn't believe the sticker on the old one dated 12/09. I think I got my money's worth and the mgr. at the Walmart auto center said it is a record for 14 years in service. I asked him if it had any warranty left and he laughed. He said the previous record was 10 years and it was out of warranty too. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
Rebar crossbow??
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to SubterraneanFireForge's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Welcome from the Ozark mountains. If you were to put your general location in your profile, like suggested in the Read This First thread, it would show up with every post and we wouldn't have to dunn ya for it because a lot of answers require knowing where in the world you are located. No sense in me telling you to stop by my forge and pick up some steel that would work for a crossbow if you are in another part of the world. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
Might I make a suggestion, pack some clay around the fire grate to make a ducks nest fire pot, which will save on using so much fuel and give you a hotter fire by concentrating the air blast. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus

German blacksmith vices - some questions
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to caotropheus's topic in Vises
If the price was right, I would buy one to have a small bench blacksmith vise, for light work that I didn't want to use the larger post vises or my bench machinist vise. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -

I think you are right about the M Thomas Powers told me that letter was the weight, when we were talking on the phone about Ike Doss and his 400 pound Columbian. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
Show me your anvil
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to Glenn's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
As you said it's a Columbian and in excellent shape, from what I can tell from the pictures. They were top tier anvils manufactured by Columbian hardware Company, Cleveland, OH I'm not positive but I think the Z & M are batch of the cast and team of workers markings when it was made. I read that somewhere but for the life of me can't remember where maybe Anvilfire and the computer that I had a lot of that info crashed years ago and all the data on it was lost. Or it could have been my mentor, Master Blacksmith Isaac Doss who had a 400 pound Columbian that I pined for, after he passed away but the family wouldn't let it go. The only other thing I can add is I hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened steel face, which does more harm than good. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -

Carl Martin had CM Leather in Berryville Ar. He made very good boots and police duty leather. This was back in the '70s-'80s. He had a contract with the State Police for all their gear. When I joined the PD in '84 I bought all my leather gear and Wellington style boots from him, still have the leather duty gear. Sadly he retired sometime in the late '90s He also did repairs on all kinds of leather including resoling boots & shoes. I sure miss him to this day. Air quality in the Smitty
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to aaamax's topic in Safety discussions
I've been in several members forges where the air is just as good as outside and you could eat off the floors. Good ventilation and house keeping seem to help. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -

Horizontal bandsaw blade tires
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks replied to JHCC's topic in Saws, bandsaws, hack saws, etc
I used Weldwood contact rubber cement about 5 years ago and it's been running like a champ ever since. Got to admit, I don't use the saw a lot and never loosen the blade, didn't know you were supposed to. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus -
I don't believe this. I have had this 5 1/2 inch jaws vise for three decades. I replaced my other vise, after breaking off the movable jaw like Frosty described in another post. Trying to install u-joints on the drive shaft from my 1953 M38A1 Willy's Overland Jeep. Are you sure someone didn't sneak into my shop to see it. It's only the second one I've seen without the C in a triangle. Oh this vise did install the u-joints. I bought it at Race Brothers Farm & Home in Harrison AR. Then there are folks like me that actually prefer the bend like that. That way you can dig down under something and then lever it out of the ground without hitting your knuckles on the ground. I even modified a store bought one to have that bend. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. Semper Paratus
