  1. If it were anything other than a Fisher, I'd suggest bedding it down on a layer of silicone caulk, which both secures the anvil to the stand and deadens the ring. Since a Fisher doesn't have much ring to speak of, that's probably not necessary. Instead, I'd go with some nice forged brackets to hold it down.
  2. I think eseemann is referring to the I-85 bridge fire in Atlanta, GA. There's no interstate going through Cohoes, although I-87 does pass just to the west.
  3. A substantial chunk of Britain's forests went into creating the Royal Navy as well, but that was also post-medieval.
  4. In North America, yes. In Europe, much (perhaps most) of the wood burned for charcoal came from managed woodlands, especially coppices. That's very labor-intensive, so when the Europeans came to North America and found vast woodlands and few restrictions on cutting the stuff down, they went hog wild. A LOT of the North American forest went into charcoal to fuel local industry.
  5. At least you've avoided synthetic fibers.
  6. @Charles R. Stevens, please tell me that you don't smith in pajamas and slippers!
  7. Salut, et bienvenue! One of my basic smithing classmates wore fingerless weightlifting gloves, which gave her good palm protection, but still good control. If you feel a spot on your hand getting hot and irritated from the hammer handle rubbing, get some tape on it right away, before the blister forms. I occasionally use weightlifter's chalk on my hands (especially if it's humid), which helps as well. Salut, et bienvenue! 8. Post a photo of the whole batch in the "It followed me home" thread!
  9. We will consider ourselves properly Edda-fied.
  10. I've never done it myself, but I've seen it mentioned here often enough to know the direction to point you in!
  11. I use an “Andy hammer” (named for Andy Mckenzie/@Everything Mac), which is a metal hammer with a hollow socket for a replaceable wooden head. Mine is made from rebar and a chunk of ash:
  12. When you go visit @Stitch, things follow you home:
  13. Nice! Gets me thinking that a smaller pair would make some decent scrolling tongs.
  14. Couple of little things. Made a salvaged bucket into a coal scuttle: And turned my old coal bucket into a bigger electrolysis tank: (One of the things currently bubbling in there is a degreasing experiment, seeing if it will get the crud out of a chunk of the cable I got from @Daswulf.) Also realized that the problem with my vacuum-cleaner-turned-forge-blower was NOT the motor burning out, but the switch. Since the variac I use for speed control has an on/off switch, I cut out the switch out of the vacuum and rewired around it. Problem solved.
  15. Courtesy of @Stitch, a nice old manual battery charger for electrolytic paint removal.
  16. @Charles R. Stevens‘s agraphia can be a bit of a challenge, but it’s almost always worth the effort. In this case, he’s trying to save your life.
  17. There was something on a thread a little while back about someone adding something to their water fire extinguisher, but I can't remember if that was a freezing point issue or a wetting agent issue. Addendum: it was a foaming agent to make the water extinguisher both class A and class B, but there was discussion of adding antifreeze as well; see https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/52940-a-close-call/
  18. There was one around here a minute ago! Where did that thing get to?
  19. In the "about to follow me home" department (in addition to some of @Stitch's jackhammer bits, which he and I have already discussed), I just got word from the college's Theater Department that they want me to "babysit" their MIG welder while the scene shop is undergoing renovations. Didn't have to ask me twice!
  20. "Uncle Owen, I'd give my right hand to get off Tatooine!"
