  1. I too would love to see the pics Gav, so post them here. I built my grinder as well and though I did buy the steel and wheels. I had a 1.75 horse single phase 2 pole that came from my retired air compressor. 1.75 horse seems to do the job for me. this DIY belt grinder motor guide was most helpful to me. if it doesn't survive check out dcknives.blogspot.com and their DIY 2x72 build pages. wealth of very specific knowledge. http://dcknives.blogspot.com/p/grinder-motors.html good luck
  2. I think you could screw a 1.5 inch coupler on that nipple you have welded to the tank. then you could drill and tap the coupling to accept some bolts (two rows of three) to place the burner in and position it for best effect. you could then probably fit a flare on the mixing tube made from one inch black pipe. the forge looks like it is coming along. good luck. M
  3. interesting. the tank I got was aluminum and only about 35 inches tall. But if I'd get the taller oxy or Inert gas cylinders, would it not they produce both quench tank and a gong? as to being greedy, well they seem to think I'm doing them a favor hauling their junk away. too bad there is really no way to easily repurpose acetylene tanks, as there are some of them there for the taking as well. I've known the family who owns the business since I was about 14.(I'm chronologically advanced now) a few brothers who are locally famous drag racers and general hot rodders, so I'm somewhat connected by past experiences. .
  4. did I miss if you had a price in mind. Das Toobinator! on Ebay has complete grinders including motor for around $700. It uses the plans I did to build mine free from DCknives.blogspot I had a free 1 3/4 horse motor and I', sure I have less than 200 in mine. It works like a champ.
  5. was going to make a quench tank of 3 inch pipe but at the advice of some and considering the volume, potential for heating the oil and splash and fire, I decided to get a bigger one. the 3 incher would have been about half a gallon leaving some room for splash and this one will be about 3.4 gallons. This tank followed me home from a local welding supply from their selection of failed hydro/inspection tanks. If Savanna IL is not too far for you and you want free retired tanks for your projects, they said I could take as many as I wanted. Looked to be around 30 of various sizes and types. give me a pm and I'll give you contact.
  6. Are the diameters appropriate for a hammer eye drift? I'm contemplating one of 4140, but thought of ending up with a largest dimension of 1.125 x 3/4. thought I'd want to start with one inch. recommendations on both the upper size and starting stock size are appreciated.
  7. we going to see this robot? Oooh I hope its a Battle Bot!!
  8. I guess compact is a relative term. Looks great. can't wait to see it pounding. are there still cushions available if they fail? I wonder if some spring replacements are ever done.
  9. Fair enough TH. I was thinking of bushcrafting type knives that might routinely get battened through kindling or such and thought the tank being at least even with, or even just a bit proud of the scale would enhance durability in such abusive situations. I certainly agree that it is beautiful
  10. I'm surprised to see the ratio on the motor to blower. looks like 1:1 or possibly a bit overdrive. fan at motor speed or above. 3600rpm or 1800? seems like it would move a tremendous quantity of air.
  11. she is a real beauty. very nice lines. Do you have any concern about the scales extending beyond the tang as it pertains to durability?
  12. Thanks Thomas It should be noted that I went back and tried to search as you suggest. using Windows 10 the default browser is bing. searching "secrets of the shining knight iforgeiron" does not yield a result in the first two pages. when searching today on google it did yield it as the first result.
  13. Looks great. perfect for cake slicing.
  14. I didn't find a better spot to post this, but if it is in the wrong spot, please move it Really enjoyed the attached Nova show. They examine how the knight's armor was made hard enough to with stand the modern technology of fire arms. intitially it succeded during the short period where the two technologies overlapped. The make 30 pound blooms that they forge into plates to be made into armor. heat treat and temper. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Hope you guys do too if you've not already seen it.
  15. Looks like a beauty. is it not an Arm and Hammer?
  16. JHCC I was hoping for something a little more narrowed down. Is this another one of those violations on the site that I don't understand? Me asking you where you got them, because I too want good deals on abrasive belts is not like you are advertising for them?
  17. You gots to start somewhere. To answer the who do you fight it q? I guess I don't, but I force moderation. gaining a little bit here and there and I keep chipping away at it. a year before I got my torch rig. half a year of collecting steel and parts to put my grinder together, took me about a month all told to research and collect parts and build my forge. It's a hobby for me, so I can't lt it control my life. If all my discretionary spending went immediately to the hobby, trouble would brew quickly on the home front. What did you make?
  18. I like them both. Not sure if the new one might be a bit busy when shrunk down to a touchmark. well done Hans.
  19. That sounds like a great price for Norton ceramic belt of a uncommon size. mind telling us where you got them?
