  1. Anvil, when you put that walnut of bees wax in the mix, does it dissolve or do you have to heat it?
  2. I've seen somewhere where people have set up their forge in a storage shed where there are no neighbors.
  3. You are one handy guy Hans. Are those flower pot dishes? It looks great. Well done.
  4. I know that the common wisdom seems to be to not do it, but dang I want to see it done.
  5. very nice. I like the proportions. plenty decorative for me.
  6. Looks functional. Not sure what you mean by straw color, that is usually a color associated with tempering in my limited experience. forge temps more commonly described with reds, oranges, yellows. good job.
  7. Well done. that knife looks all business.
  8. It looks like a very nice build to me. I've packed the space between my mixing tube and burner mount with kaowool, rigidized it so no air can go that way. also, I started with one row of burner mounting bolts and after one mishap realized I needed a second row which I installed. the second set of mounting bolts really secures the burner rigid. Also, I think it was Frosty who alerted me to the chimney effect the burner has when the forge is just shut down. I have a choke cap that I routinely close right after forging to keep the air flow and heating of the jet tube to a minimum from super heated air rushing back up the burner. Don't know if this is critical, but It is part of my routine. Nice work
  9. I think it is an old time preservative. wiped on sparingly and allowed to dry, it polymerizes and leaves a hard finish. I've found that after I wipe off the excess after an hour or so and let it dry for a couple days it is a hard non sticky coating. if there are still sticky spots, wiping with a wd-40 rag will clean it off. I think the short answer is that it works.
  10. Templehound, thanks for that link. I am starting to get the urge to make some knives.
  11. Jimmies It looks great to me. is the refractory done or will it receive further coating? Iike a wash of plistix or similar? I don't know if your set up allows for porches front and back to stack your fire brick doors to adjust your openings. I didn't do the conversions of your volume, is it good for one burner? Keep us posted on your progress.
  12. It is a sweetly executed knife. very pleasing to the eye.
  13. Looks killer Shawn. the hollow is from your grinder you just put the tool rest on?
  14. Shamus, I don't know if the mention of the pattern welded knife book was genuine or not. Elsewhere I see it mentioned fondly. hard to get an answer I know. Anyway that book is available used from Amazon for $25 bucks rather than the 1500 or what ever it is going for elsewhere on amazon.
  15. Glenn I was referring to the "Book Section" that steve was referring to. that is all I had to go on. searches for book section did not yield a result. then in store, books printed material (seemed like the closest thing to a book section) no joy I figured if he meant book reviews he would have said it. but if book reviews in miscellaneous discussions (don't know how I missed that) is where the answer lies, I have not found it yet.
  16. It might be that things are hard to find. JHCC you said it popped up. what popped up. I don't see a link. I searched IFI and google "the pattern welded blade Iforgeiron.com" no hit. Steve a better question is why do you have a book section that you can't find anything in? I looked at the forum book section and your book is the only one in there. articles nothing on point downloads maybe but if so not clear google ifi nope.
  17. Great work Jason. Hope it was fun. I too wouldn't mind a tell all. Mike
  18. recovering from my surgery, doing my PT. even a little more as suggested. not violating my restrictions. the doc said, no bending the hip less then 90 degrees, no turning the surgical leg inwards and no crossing of the legs. beyond that if I can tolerate it, I can do it. Well Mrs. Moto caught me dropping an oxy tank into its cart yesterday and she blew a gasket. I showed her that the walker was right there in easy reach. She is just now starting to talk to me again. my explanations are not seeming to work she doesn't even want me in the garage.... live and learn...
  19. Aus those are beautiful. they have a natural flow to them seem almost real. well done. Mike
  20. Shawn: That rest looks to be quite functional. I could not imagine trying to grind those straights without one. Looking good
  21. Nice looking hook. well proportioned and pleasing to the eye.
  22. very impressive. if you make coils with larger apertures to handle larger work will it's ability be reduced?
