  1. Urthman, nice job on the hood/flue pipe. Do you see that the rain cap inhibits the flow any, or can you tell? I understand that the gap on the cap should be equal to the diameter of the flue pipe...what's yours?
  2. Here's pulling for you a 100% recovery! Smithing is a good therapy; mental or physical. Takes your mind off everything but the "scrap" you're hammering on. Stick with it, but not to extremes.
  3. People quote in every forum I've ever read, and that's a LOT of them...don't sweat it. It's a handy tool when used properly. I personally like the quote function.
  4. When burning your coke, incomplete combustion of the carbon and oxygen from your air supply will produce carbon monoxide resulting in a blue flame, among other sources. Just provide plenty of ventilation as in any forging.
  5. I guess that I'd be safe doing that, then. I just had it in my mindset that a slab of red-hot steel would/could remove the temper somewhat if left for any length of time, if for only 1/8" to 1/4", thereby softening the face a little. Maybe the overall mass and lower temp of the anvil body would prevent removing any near-surface temper.
  6. I realize some folks heat a slab of steel to place on the anvil to pre-heat it prior to forging on very cold days. I never have felt a need to do that, but in case I ever decided to, how hot can the plate be before one might ruin the temper on an anvil? Mine is a 170# Hay Budden. I realize forging with something fresh out of the forge is in contact with the anvil for only a short time compared to just laying a plate on it a leaving it there.
  7. I use the slit and drift technique to form the initial hole. The slit leaves more material on the sides, in my experience. Then, open with drift and horn.
  8. Ahhh, so....I stand corrected, thank you!. Just didn't go far enough. Senior moment

    Flat jaw tongs

A boss that's not flat on the bearing surfaces probably is the problem, other than a hole that's too large. Usually when you hot set your rivet it will swell up enough to fill the gap in the holes if the holes aren't too large. I had a problem with a couple of tongs that were loose and wobbly like your's and I drilled out the rivet, flattened the inside of the bosses to a "perfect" fit and no 'mo wobble!
  11. Just use plain old vinegar...cheap, safe, effective.
  12. That's gonna make for a pretty thick quench.......
  13. I would recommend following up on Charles' suggestion about the Saltfork Craftsmen. What better place to get started, ask questions and observe smithing than a meeting? They will be more than happy to help you get started. In our group we have had visitors pick up a hammer and try out smithing on a simple project and left hooked on blacksmithing!! Ain't no vaccines available to keep you from getting infected with the "smithing fever"!!
  14. For those who might be interested in attending, a Memorial for Ron Wells will be held in Mt. Judea, Arkansas at 4 PM, Saturday, October 1 at the Mt. Judea school.
  15. MB is nothing more than a metal fab shop show...very little, if any, blacksmithing...'jus my 2c worth.
  16. Great job with the electrolysis!! Nice old anvil...put it to work and enjoy it.
  17. Update as of Sept. 24 for upcoming October BOA meetings: Two location changes. River Valley Chapter: Oct. 1, Greenwood, AR Central Chapter: Oct. 15, Conway, AR
  18. With a heavy heart, I must announce the passing today, Sept. 23, 2016, of BOA's beloved Treasurer, Coal Meister and a Past President, Ron Wells. Ron was a victim of terminal lung and brain cancer. He was a great friend and will be greatly missed by many. RIP, my friend.

  20. It may not look "authentic", but you might get a die and thread the tips of the handles then screw nuts on them.
  21. Try Wheeler Metals up in Rogers. They might not have specialty steels like you need, but it may be worth a call...they might know where you can find some locally if not with them.
  22. RIP Doug, we'll all miss you here and over on WW. Condolences to his family.
  23. Yep, it's dead allright....my wood floor has more rebound than that anvil!
  24. You don't need to line a brake drum forge. The cast iron drum is all you need.
