  1. Ivan, what did that block used to be in life before you found it? thanks Ernest
  2. Who installed it, I have been wanting to do just that? What kind of welder do you have? Even at very reduced power the plasma cutter looks to be lots of fun and I would like to let it work wide open. thanks
  3. I think this is the case in point that supports what you are saying. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-abIqBGbbDHs/learn/why-you-need-power-protection.html “There was a burning smell, and the ceiling fans were hanging by a wire.”. “A neutral wire failure,” With no return path for the current, the two hot wires pumped 240 volts throughout J’s house. Anything that used 120 volts received twice the power it could handle. The ceiling fans whipped around at a violent speed until they burned out. This would be what is referred to on the show Red Dwarf as "brown trousers time". I have a good (I think) surge protector on my computer but I was thinking I might need a better protector.
  4. John, Beware the "Expert" that just joins the crew. Guy I know that was an apprentice on a stone mason crew that built rock walls in SW Virginia told me about this guys first and last day on the job. As I understand it a good quality chisel will mushroom and this guy was bragging about the quality of his old chisels. The first blow he landed on that first day shot a chip on to his hand that came way too close to looking like a suicide attempt. I don't think he needed glove because his tools loved him? They were up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge and after they got the bleeding stopped they got him to the ER. About 1/2 days work wasted not counting getting blood off the Boss' rock. Even a well trained tool can turn on you and taste your flesh and blood.
  5. DSW, I sank a rod about 30 inches in the ground (not long enough but what I had on hand because at the last second I thought about what my wife would do to me if I broke the house by using the house common ground stake. The same thing happened and I wonder if this is due to the breaker tripping. The computer was fine when the breaker tripped twice but when I came back in the screen was blank and I had to re-start. Do you see any problem running a cutter from a 5500 watt generator if you have the right amp outlet? I have a 8 foot grounding rod I am saving for the next tornado and I will NEED the generator.
  6. DSW, Thanks for the information, I will give this a shot. I have a grounding rod outside I can use.
  7. Arkie, We are now at is Eseemann Crazy=maybe not! Thank you much. I work with a few electrical engineers and I will ask them on Monday as well. I will post any advise they have.
  8. I just got my (admitted) lowest common denominator Chinese plasma cutter from Amazon and other than I need to upgrade from the 15 amp breaker I am using it works better than I thought i would. Even with this being a MOSFET cutter on a 15 amp 120 volt outlet it seems to hold its own. One small strangeness that I think might be related is that after I do some cutting I have a black screen on my PC in the kitchen. I can tell the computer is not frozen from the keyboard lights and the computer sounds but there is nothing on the screen until turn the computer off and back on again. The computer is not on the same breaker as the cutter but the computer is very close the breaker box. I wonder if a surge protector with really good EM noise filtering might help the problem. There is a screw on the back of the cutter with the "ground" symbol above it. I wonder if I should run this a ground spike along with the three pronged plug. This is the cutter Zeny® Plasma Cutter 50AMP CUT-50 Digital Inverter 110-220V Welder Cutting Machine (CUT-50) My goal is to get a 240 outlet installed so I can use this a 240 and upgrade my 120 buzz box to something like a Lincoln Tombstone stick welder. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this or am I off base? Thanks

    My latest pickup

I hope you lifted with your legs when picking that big guy! Nice looking vise.
  10. Sledgehammer Chipping Failure Richard Garber, S.E.A., Inc. From: Handbook of Case Histories in Failure Analysis, Vol 1, K.A. Esakul, Ed., ASM International, 1992 Abstract: A sledge hammer chipped during use. The chip struck a by stander in the eye, leading to its loss. The hammerhead surface was examined visually, nondestructively (magnetic particle method), and stereo microscopically, and a microstructural analysis of a cross section of the head was conducted using optical microscope. Chemical composition of the hammerhead was determined by emission spectrometry. The chemical compositions of the chip and hammer head were compared using energy-dispersive analysis. Microhardness versus distance from the striking face was also determined. The hammerhead material was UNS G10800 (AISI/SAE grade 1080). Excessive hardnesses were measured in the first 3 mm (0. 12 in.) below the striking surface, indicating that there was lack of control during the final tempering operation. Keywords: Hammers; Impact Material: 1080 (Nonresulfurized carbon steel), UNS G10800 Failure types: Brittle fracture; Heat treating-related failures; Spalling wear Circumstances leading to failure Two 16-year-olds were using a maul to split wood. The maul became stuck in a log. To free the maul, one young man struck it with a sledgehammer. A metal chip flew off and hit the other young man in the eye. http://products.asminternational.org/fach/data/fullDisplay.do?database=faco&record=1096&search=
  11. 781, I noticed this old post, did you get the plasma cutter you mentioned or another Chinese cutter and if so how did it work out?
  12. Keep in mind that some Grade 8 bolts are cadmium coated. Cadmium coating has a yellowish (almost like brass) look to it
  13. DSW, Thank you much, that is what I needed to know.
  14. Good Morning All, Can a black iron pipe be joined to mild steel either with O/A welding, brazing or stick arc welding? thanks
  15. I saw one show where an electric car called "Gone Postal" had sooooo much starting torque a drive belt had a catastrophic failure and then a axle snapped. Funny thing about starting torque on an EV is that people have likened it to a rocket taking off.
  16. Thank you for the feedback, I am thinking I will keep the curve in the blade but I will take some of the dents and such out.
  17. Never mind, I found it on another page.
  18. I was over at the ABANA website and the link to the Granger discount page was broken. Do you know if Granger still has this program?
  19. I love your axe, that is not something you see every day.
  20. Here is the first try at a RR Spike Tomahawk that I have completed to the "recognizable object" phase. This should be good for stock removal when I need to make tool handles and such. The leather cover will have a snap to hold it on so I can use it as a camp hammer without splitting my head open.
  21. I think you could skip the chickens and behead the cow! Good looking chopper!

David, Did you make the Hamon line with clay or differential quenching? Looks good. Ernest
