  1. I was there Thingmaker & I suspect it was far more down to amateurish hammer control (there were a number of blokes very new to forging, inlcuding me & Basher can't be everywhere) than bad anvils. I hope that wasn't me that damaged them mate. :o
  2. I thought that was a gas tank for an LPG conversion when you sent me the text. Or am I still missing something?
  3. I'll ask mate as I'd love to do it, but sprog will only be a couple of weeks old so it may not be possible.
  4. Looks similar to the ones you see on the local fleabay occasionally? The company should be able to give you the stat's re. steel type & heat treat. If they can't, I'd be suspicious. Having said that, I'm sure I remember another Aussie member posting a thread saying he'd bought one off fleabay, but unfortunately I don't think he's updated with how he likes it.
  5. Good luck at the sale pal. Remember no lifting!
  6. Hello Dave & welcome. You'd better start saving your pennies for Get Hammered. It's on at Moony's over the last weekend in October. It's 2-3 hours drive south of Sydney.
  7. Alan, it looks a bit swaybacked, a bit chipped at the edges, & generally well used. Plenty of life left in it yet. My no-name anvil cost me $300 & weighs about 70Kg. I say go for it, if you can afford say $350 or perhaps a bit more. If you do an advanced search on fleabay you can tick the 'completed listings' button & that way see what other anvils have gone for. Just remember that an anvil doesn't have to be London Pattern. ANY large block of steel will do the job. Good luck Matt
  8. Whoohoo!! We got our own section! Thnaks a lot Glenn. The info on Get Hammered is out of date though, the Hungi was last year. Dale's talking about a spit roast this year. There'll also be an attendance fee to help defray the costs. Hey Mike, I guess we're official now!
  9. YES!! Another expat for Moony's! Hi Denise, & welcome to IFI. I look forward to meeting you in October. I'd love to have studied at Hereford, just wish I'd known about it earlier in life. Bloody useless career guidance teachers!!!
  10. Try this: http://www.google.com.au/m/search?site=images&source=mog&gl=au&q=w.%20heath%20robinson And this: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/scrapheap-challenge/4od although I'm not sure if C4's video can be seen outside the U.K.
  11. Well, we could go with an electrically powered spit. That's normal. Or, we could build a water, steam, wind powered spit, with lots of Heath Robinson looking parts, medieval looking mechanisms, that sort of thing. Steam punk! Have you ever seen the British Scrapheap Challenge series? Think that sort of mad engineering type thing. :)
  12. BBQ or spit roast sounds like a good idea. Yes, keep the Sat. night feed. As you say, it helps make the weekend what it is. If we did a spit roast, I wonder if we could do it in a suitable blacksmithy come steam-punk stylee? I'm still going. :)
  13. Scrapartoz, Do you apply the fish oil to hot metal, or once it's cold? Paint, spray or rub on? I've used fish oil at work, but hadn't thought of it for finishing purposes. Being on the gold coast I'm always searching for a method of finishing that will keep the raw metal look without turning to rust in a couple of weeks!
  14. What Mike said. J.A, this'll probably sound heartless & maybe mercenary, but... If those old buildings are going to be restored, or if new ones in the old style will be built... Who's going to supply all the ironwork, eh? I mean, mass produced & obvioulsy stick welded stuff just does not look right. Now I wouldn't be surprised if your local planning / heritage officers don't know there are still blacksmiths capable of doing it right. Go educate them & good luck. ;)
  15. Have you lost your list again bloke??? If it's on, I'm there! If it's not, I'll maybe just show up & have fun with Moony anyway! I'm also pretty sure Andrew OC was a definite again too. Ian Lowe was saying that he'd love to come if he can find the dosh, but I expect you've spoken to him more recently than I. I'll keep mentioning it at ABAQ meets. There's been some interest, but no firm yes from anyone yet. Phil, as John asked - any more plans for a hammer-in at your place?
  16. Wow! Just, WOW!! Like the rest have said, that's the best 'junk' art I've seen in a loooong time.
  17. For the dust, how about an old, large fan (or several)? Make an open ended box to put it in, and attach filter media to the inlet end. If there's an air conditioning suppliers near you, they'll sell filter media or be able to sugest somewhere that will & it's not really expensive. I'd recommend at least F4 & preferably F5 filtration. Just stick 'em up in your smithy so the dirty air gets drawn over the filter & the clean air recirculates around the shop. For the fumes, perhaps you could score an old fume cupboard or similar? Would running an extract fan with a water bath on the outlet side work, like some do with their coal forges? Sorry, I'm in A/C as you may have guessed, but fume extraction / treatment isn't something I've been involved in.
  18. In my case, I found the cheapest option was a trickle charger, 12V motor bike battery from the local recycler, and an air gate on the fan inlet. You need the battery between the charger and the fan motor to give the charger a load - it won't operate wired directly to the motor. The charger was less than $25, the battery was 'free' in return for taking my scrap to them. Double_edge2 has very kindly sourced the fan for me.
  19. G'day! I'm just the other side of the border a bit north of Twin Towns. I'm heading up to Brisvegas this Saturday for the usual ABAQ meet at Mick's, should you fancy coming along.
  20. Don't forget to keep the bosh full of water. Thanks for the fire brick info John & Owen. :)
