Here is my fourth completed Damascus (pattern welded) knife - This one is made from 1084, 1095 and 15N20. I sandwiched 3 layers of 15N20 into middle of billet for contrast. Scales are ironwood. After looking at pics, I will sand finer with scales because I see grooves in the mosaic pins that I want to not show. Thanks for looking

A Big thanks to Columbia Marking Tools - Great job with my Touch Mark!

I think 1 1/2" pipe will be sufficient. Why do you want larger?

Ok, gotcha! Your welds look great. I did my first few by hand and it is a workout. Now, am using a 33 tong log splitter to do all of my welds and this has really sped the process up. I dont have a power hammer, but I actually think the press is smoother and reduces shear type stresses inherent with hammers. -

Looks great - weld a handle onto it and it will be a lot easier to work with. -
As a practicing physician assistant, I would suggest that you address you social phobias now rather than later. If you outright admit that you can;t even work one on one with another person without fear of bad things happening, this has now become your life priority.. This type of phobia must be sequestered before you can move on and lead a safe and productive life. Go see a counselor or continue if you are....this needs to be addressed because whether you work for yourself in your own business or for another person, you must become comfortable with one on one coping skills. Just my opinion from a medical standpoint.

The handle on the knife in the pic was from scales ordered from Jantz or USA knife makers.

Thanks guys - Will continue to let dry and see what I end up with - Was wondering about stabilization and may send them out for that after they are dried better

I cut this large burl off an old maple tree around 8 months ago. Is it worth using handle material? Should it be stabilized or dried and oiled?

Here is another billet from my forge (Union Forge). This one has three layers of 15N20 sandwiched between 4 layers of 66 layer Damascus (had 1084, 1095 and 15N20 in it) from another project. Total layer count is 267. Ground a ladder and cross pattern into it. I couldn't wait to see what it looked like so I ground to 220 grit, cleaned it up and dropped into ferric chloride etchant. Happy with results so far. Will now start the knife part next.

Another gas versus coal question
kayakersteve replied to jdawgnc's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
The reference to welding was about forge welding - this is not something you can do with electricity. Forge welding is much different then mig, tig, stick which only welds the edges of material. Keep doing research. Forge welding may not seem like a need at present, but everyone who sticks with smithing eventually wants to try it. -
Not saying it wasn't reasonable, but it the listed price online and does not reflect a discount. No worries, just making a point.

Hey Stamp Man - I have order placed with your company and can't wait to receive it. Under Union Forge, Westfield NY. When I placed order and asked for your discount, they acted like I was crazy! Charge was 160 and change.
