    Thanks everyone - I have found it a nice place to live on my wall and use it once and awhile to slay pumpkins and watermelons. No blood to Thomas's dismay!

    If its only your second knife, don't worry about time it takes to make. You need to focus more on good techniques IMO

    It appears to already have an edge, albeit a crude one.

    Please don't swing it as it appears the handle portion is pounded onto blade section by bending the steel around the blade portion. This would not be safe to swing. If it were forge welded, that MAY be different

    If you are going to try to rethink this whole process, do yourself a big favor and read up more. Also, 1084 would be a much easier steel to learn heat treat basics on as it is more forgiving.

    Off of RockNazz post, a knife needs to have the ability to harden to be too brittle where a break could occur. In this case, you cant harden a RR spike enough due to low carbon content, so I believe she can have fun using it, but it will not hold much of an edge at all.

    Dont know why, but my damascus etches way better after heat treat.

    304 stainless has nowhere near enough carbon to be hardened - If this is what you used, it will simply be a wall hanger.
