I remember going to the local trash and treasure market one Sunday afternoon, but most stalls had packed up nad left for the day. I was wondering the grounds checking the few still there when I noticed something left behind. It was a little salesman anvil shaped in London pattern, perfectly proportionate but fits in the palm of your hand about 4" long by 2.5" high. That one followed me home alright!

As far as 'all vices do this' ... not so. If you clamp something out of centre in a vice, any vice, this creates a lateral force because the point of contact is not in the centre of the jaws aligned with the screw, but on the side. The vice deals with this lateral force according to how it is made. A parallel engineering vice, has the moving jaw mounted on a long and precisely machined guide that does not allow for much lateral movement. Furthermore the touching surfaces are wide and long and can withstand a lot of lateral pressure without a problem. The lateral force will produce a slight torsion on the moving jaw, that will make it flex very little or if the force is strong enough, brake it. On a post vice, there is no such precise guide. The post vice is built to withstand a lot of abuse and is made with a lot of slack. The lateral force produced when clamping out of centre forces the screw against the body and the touching surface is much smaller than in an engineering vice. The result is much more wear of the surfaces and a lot of force against the body in that point resulting in wear and deformation. Eventually the jaws develop a lot of lateral slack and it is no longer possible to clamp something out of centre like in this case and a spacer becomes necessary. But that is not how the vice was when it was new. A sleeve will return the jaws to their centre. The use of a spacer will keep them centred for another 100 years.

Mm ... usually when considering a machine made in Whoknowswexistan, one makes concessions based on price ... I mean cheaper price not dearer!! Now that I think about it, this is a great business concept. Buy machines from Alibaba at $200 a dozen. Post on ebay for $2000 each, call yourself beautiful for added allure, . Someone will bait. Sell one machine and have 11 free to flog off at 100% profit Forget it, buy standard machine from known supplier with available parts and service powered by a totally enclosed motor.

The weld seems to have cracked for the most part already. I am not sure why the reluctance to fix it. Sure needs to be done properly, but a PW deserves better than being kept broken in two like that.

150 kg ? Pss ... 2 people can move 150k around as they please. And some can move 150 on their own. All you need is a forklift ha ha That is the anvil Good for you ... now are you sure you don't want the 500 K one?

Last time I asked the question to one of the Refflinghaus family, he told me 57 Rockwell at 25mm depth. You can email them, they are quick to answer. I agree that the southern German pattern is probably the best shape, together with the French 'pig'

Ha ha, I was not thinking in some apocalyptic creature, more like the case of Araucaria genus that exists in different continents and islands under different species. Having said that without aiming at offending Thomas, we have creatures here that no one has confirmed they exist. There is a family of pumas on the Flinders ranges in South Australia, released a long time ago by a circus owner, and there is an elusive panther like creature allegedly marsupial that wanders the Blue Mountains and surroundings in the state of NSW Of course we also allegedly have the Hawkesbury monster, something like the lock Ness monster and a Yeti of sort, and many other interesting and probably imaginary animals

You know that our Frogmouth is not really an owl. Wide beak to catch insects and weaker feet only for perching. More related to our Kookaburra. Having said that, there are many animals and plants that seem to have a counterpart in the American continent.

I think it is a perfectly genuine concern, considering that a PW that size is probably worth $3000 and up, and a ? brand substantially less, regardless of their usefulness as a tool.

Mm ... you guys are expert at blowing anvils up in the air ... it would probably take a fair amount of black powder to do that with this fat boy.

Being pig country I would guess 308 winchester soft nose or 7.62x39, the latter cheap chinese ammo has a steel billet in it ... just a guess.

Sure, problem is that it's 8 hs drive away and it is still a work week. Owner promised more photos for the w/end. What do you think of the bullet mark? Does it say anything about cast or forged?

Must wait for the owner to sling her up with the forklift and take more pictures. I can't see any plate and there is what seems to be a hole in the waist but none on the feet ... mm ... Would a rifle round make such deep indentation in cast? Anyway wait and see. Anvil is 8 hs drive away, but the price may be worth my time. I'll let you know how it goes ...
