  1. Njanvilman for the WiN!!!! You're such an asset to this community, I can't thank you enough! I for one look forward to purchasing you're book, and I'm sure a great many others can't wait till it's fresh off the press!
  2. If you notice there in the very-bottom picture, just below the top plate and behind the horn, there is a very peculiar hole... I can't quite wrap my mind around what exactly the intention wast there... At first I thought that it was a casting blemish, but its perfectly round as if someone poked their finger into it... I couldn't imagine Fisher producing a product that awful, and letting it slide out the door... I could actually fit my index finger in it, just past the root of my cuticle... Then, It mades me think of that wagoneer anvil... I reminded myself that the base was cast iron, and probably couldn't take that stress. I just don't understand why its there??? Random placement, but the blemish itself looks uniform and symmetrically round... It resembles those nasty interstate truck stop bathrooms with the laminate facia particle board stalls... your minding your own business, hovering, not trying to touch anything except the paper, and then you notice that work spot on the divider where a little peek hole that's about 75% complete, just waiting to break the laminate barrier to the other side... I'm stumped on that one until I here from someone like NJanvilman...
  3. Got this Fisher today for $125... It was advertised as a vulcan... It's 100 pounds +/- 20... really interesting though... as it has handling holes and the eagle is facing to the right... a lot of the fishers I've seen the eagle head points to the left...?
  4. What an amazing find! It's certainly neat that's for sure... Try and wire brush it and bring out more detail... Would those with a little more knowledge than I see a problem with a spark test???... Just to verify that it is, in fact, cast iron... I see what looks to be a casting blemish there, but you never know...
  5. This input is priceless... I think I'm game for ordering one and trying it out for myself now...
  6. This was an amazing video. My father and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for posting!!!!
  7. For the complete package, I believe he said $395... There was the torch itself, I think there were 3 types of tips and three specialized tips, a wheelbarrow wheel cutting attachment and... Ummm? I think that was it? Oh, and the lifetime guarantee...
  8. I would also recommend Gibbs penetrant... or a simple recipe of transmission fluid and lacquer thinner serves as a very good penetrant... Both work wonders when it comes to both rust and freeing up rusty bolts, and hinges...
  9. I would give up a kidney for that anvil, 260lbs, sweedish Soderfors, in MINT condition mind you... You're talking about the best of the best there... easily get $3 to $4 a pound if not more on the flea bay...
  10. I think it's an Iron City Vise... It reads "LIMITED, PITTSBURGH, No 80" I like to think I got a good deal at $65.,,,
  11. Good on you Razz... From now on out, for some odd reason you'll now be subjected to a plethora of favors... :D.... similar to sharks smelling blood in the water... When friends, family, and communities know you're capable of sticking two pieces of metal together, it's too late... lol... I do most of my "favor" welding for materials costs, as I enjoy welding and helping people out... My area hasn't gotten over the economic slump, so some of these simple repairs to farm implements, carts, etc. really go a long ways... Karma will find you, as kindness is a priceless commodity these days.
  12. Thread resurrected!!! I watched a demo at the FL flywheelers, and it was nothing short of an amazing... Then the gentlemen adressed the retail price, and everyone scattered... lol There seemed to be a great bit of potential with the product, just haven't got enough opinions to make the price tag any less intimidating...
  13. I've yet to identify my own anvil, and the similarities between it and a Wilkinsons, Mousehole, Hill, etc, are uncanny... Thomas Powers made mention that there where over 200 manufacturers in england in the mid to late 1800s... I wish there were some compilation of unique features brought to the table to identify origin, but it's kind of hard when they all have so many similarities...
  14. Hill Birmingham Anvil? Here's a recent thread with identifiable pictures... http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/31242-hill-birmingham-235lbs/
  15. It's ill-advised to test "rebound", one might jeopardize one's marriage.
  16. Just so happens I have a large Yale wood turning lathe in the barn.... This is the first time I've ever heard of metal spinning... Wow!
  17. Be true to your craft and your touchmark.... The phrase "good enough" should only be used and directed towards things that won't outlive you, and don't carry your name throughout the next few centuries...
  18. That's gorgeous... I would use the heck out of it for a months and report back all the areas of concern... I'd add more mass and incorporate the feet more into the mass. It just looks like its tiptoeing...lol .... Save my input on aesthetics, it looks like quite the work horse...
  19. So... It followed me home... I couldn't make well on the rebound test at the point of sale, as it had a really thick coat of pant all over it... I made sure to take a key to all those questionable areas that someone would patch it with resin, and it was all good... took it home, stripped it, at dropped a small ball been on it and thud... felt weak... cut it out of the stand tried again, thud... no real mentionable rebound or sound for that matter... So I wire brushed it to life. taking a good amount of gummed up corrosion, and tried to identify it by throwing powder on it... I spent a good hour looking for anything, and all I could find was an S... As seen below... And here... above the middle carat weight, up about 2-3" there seems to be the bottom part of an X... which leads me to believe that it might be a Wilkinson's Queen Dudley I'm still not %100 sure... Honestly couldn't find squat on the other side... After a few rounds of wd40 and a wire brush she started to clean up really well... the face is in amazing condition...And I hear a fait ting when i bounced the hammer off the heel... more and more brushing and the rebound started to become very pronounced along with the ringing all you guys are talking about... I can't wait to work with it...
  20. Or they ask why do you shoot them up in the air? They aren't supposed to fly???? :D I will have it by noon tomorrow... I'll report back with a better pics...
  21. Sorry, my bad... didn't annotate the 15 at the end... Id'd the first and second, the measuring tape, that measures height blocked the middle 1... The owner was out in the barn when I called, she had never noticed those numbers before... I keep looking above the carat weight and seeing that arched text... I see a solid H, and that's it... lol.. I'm new to all this but I'm thinkings it's a queen, a foster, or a no-named... I let her know the gist of what it was worth, as she really didn't have any idea... Told her about the $1-$3 a pound based on condition, quality, location... I told her that her location put her in the realm of $3 + a pound, especially with the market... she could very well get $4-5$ a pound on ebay as well... I try to be honest, doesn't always work out in my favor, but in this case it did... She said $250 and it's mine, and thanked me for my honesty... Finally, it paid off!!!! ... I will give it a once over when I get there, but It's visual condition seems immaculate, and it comes with a hardy and a stand... @ $1.61 a pound I think it's a steal, and I can't wait to work steel on it... From what she said, that stand, base and table are solid plate steel... that steering castor wheel looks like a bushhog blade to me... just to give you an idea of weight... That stand is pretty cool, but I'll probably cannibalize it for something else...
  22. I do see text in the first picture on the top where the horn is facing away from the camera... It's arched, can't really make it out...
